Aruba at HiST Presentation for colleagues in Uninett-land 30.10.2013 Arnt Richard Rørvik, SPO/ICT, head of Development of ICT-services in HiST. Welcome! The following material is a small presentation of wireless at HiST, the University College of Sor-Trondelag, Trondheim. First a small – and very Norwegian – greeting :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K83J_Oyc8sw The opinions expressed in these PP-slides are those of the author; and may or may not represent official HiST views and strategies. 1.0 (2007/2008-2010) • • • • Objectives: Focusing on robust high-capacity wireless anywhere Reducing number of eSSID’s: hist-guest and eduroam Defining classes of service: – User groups, access control, QoS, services, security restrictions. 1.0 • Coverage: – 100% for portable computers- Pc, Mac, indoor – High aggregate bandwidth in high usage areas (auditoriums etc.) • In the forefront in terms of 802.11n: Cisco Aironet 1252, late 2008. • Working! – Extra cabling (not in use), or planned cabling for increased density and coverage – Outdoor coverage between buildings 1.0 • Policy: Decommissioning old radio technology as quickly as possible – Turning off 802.11b – consuming airtime from g/n • Restricting the use of unauthorised APs • Additional reguirements: Hosting in-house alien venues – Reducing interference within premises 1.0 • Radiation & health: Policy vs. employees – – – – Important aspect. Corporate responsibility. Recent research (R. Oftedal) Norms: ICNIRP, PTT, other gov. institutions Psychology: • • • • • • Hidden APs (but losing some signal strength) No Aps in offices Distance important – Aps of little significance with HiST’s placement of APs Employees own use of devices most significant – distance to antennas. Cellulars – much more powerful Antenna placement and distance important • Cisco Wism (1) and Cisco Aironet 1252 implementation – Tricky getting all kinds of equipment online with stable connections Agenda . 2.0 (2012/13) 1. Updated ambitions: 1. Increased use of wireless among students 1. Office 365/ Lync Online, multimedia, small videos etc. 2. Requirements of employees 2. Means for an end: 1. New buildings – even higher density 2. 802.11ac – right time to og for it? 2.0 (2010-2015) • We have Cisco, would we need anything else? • Price competition with certain performance demands – – Uninett-facilitated – Aruba won – But how often is it practical to change vendor? Transition costs etc.? • eduroam «basic» – Quick and simple job - «do it yourself» 2.0 • eduroam «full package» – Airwave, Clear Pass Policy Manager (CPPM) – Major job, including guest module • Deployment example: HHiT 1. 2. 65 dBm requirement HHiT 10000 m2., 125 APs, => 78 m2/AP. -> ca. 8,8 m. between each AP • Directional antennas (combi 2.4/5 GHz Aruba) in auditoriums – HHiT – Dividing into sectors • «Over-head antennas» • Antennas under the seat – not in compliance with company policy • Beamshaping – ClientMatch etc. • Better client control 2.0 • Why 802.11ac for HiST? • Planning for even higher wifi demand – Demands rocketing. Lync Online/onsite a major driver. • 802.11ac a superior standard – Patching many standard flaws of 802.11g/n (and earlier) – 5 GHz with increased reach (standardizing beamforming more) and shorter airtime – Standardized support for directing clients, power consumed etc. 2.0 • New buildings: Planned from ground-up «cable-wise» • Planning using VisualRF – Pretty much a solid performer, 3D (floor above/underneath) • Cabling & mounting a fixed cost – => Low when doing it up-front/when buildings built – => Tearing down equipment and replacing APs just a few years later is expensive – => Re-planning coverage is expensive (difficult to re-use cabling unless doing an up-front coverage planning for AC) – => Re-cabling is very expensive • Hopefully, planning in Trådløst HiST 1.0 still useful for 2.0/AC. 2.0 • From now on, completing Trådløst HiST 2.0: – 802.11ac on all new campuses – Gradually replacing 802.11n, 400 APs in 2014. – Considering «eduroam at home» • • • • Internet connection payed for by HiST Require to use of a HiST Remote AP? Prioritizing traffic of the HiST employee. Offering eduroam to eduroam users in the vincinity. Trådløst HiST 3.0? More open More secure Simpler to use With predictable capacity, growing in step with deman 2.0 • Airwave – Running in VM (Vmware) – Very simple to install & use – VisualRF a good example; both monitoring & planning. • Clear Pass Policy Manager – Also virtualized (Vmware) – Starring: «Guest module» • Also appearing on the show: 802.11ac clients • DEMO! (AT LAST) :-)
