Hi, my name is Ian Horne
I am 54 year old scaffolder working on the north sea oil rig’s i have two main
passions in life after my family of course one is a good scotch malt, and the other
is taking pictures around Scotland of our stunning scenery, and using bottles of
whisky as a prop in some of them.
I am married with two grown up daughters and a two year old grandson, both my
daughters did highland dancing, both play bagpipes and piano accordian, my wife
Elaine also plays the pipes and was a highland dancer also in her younger days, she
is now a dance teacher with my youngest daughter Tanya who has her won highland dance school with over 80 pupils in it. Tanya herself got to the last 16 in the
world highland dance championships on two occasions.
The wifes uncle, the late great Bobby Coghill, was pipe major in the Wick pipe
band, and did various other fantastic piping events, lone piper at Edinburgh castle
and loads of stuff like that (go to YouTube and look for Colarado at wembley with
Bobby Coghill playing dark island). The wifes father also played fiddle in the Wick
fiddle and accordian club, so you could say im kinda steeped in the Scottish tradition.
I live about 1000 mtrs from the famous Old Pulteney distillery here in Wick and
it goes without saying it is my favourite whisky, has any one tried the 21 year old
stunning dram.
I have started framing some of my pictures in old barrel staves, lids and bespoke
stuff like that.Have a few pictures done and a few display units as well so the picture of the bottle of whisky is surrounded by the wood it once matured in, who
know the exact wood might have been used for the very picture of the bottle.
I am in the process of setting up a website where the stuff when made will be avail4

able to buy. It will be a buy when made site as we don’t want to produce too much
of the same stuff. Some stuff will be made with names engraved on glasses, and
names sand blasted onto the staves, everything will be as rustic as we can make it,
including the charring on the vack off the staves.
I work very closely with Macleans whisky tours Scotland, who also use a few of
my images for their web page, we owe a lot to Paul Maclean, so if any one fancies a
whisky tour or any other tour Macleans must be the guy’s to use .

The Clan MacBeth

Het was een unieke Schotse Avond zaterdagavond 2 november in het Gomarus
College in Groningen. Alle 6 pipe bands uit het Noorden van Nederland stonden
voor het eerst op het podium. Dit is nog nooit voorgekomen in de Nederlandse
doedelzakgeschiedenis!
Daarnaast was er een blended pipe band van de 6 pipe majors en de 6 leading
drummers alle 6 bands! Ook dit was uniek, never seen in The Netherlands!
Er waren danseressen van Carieke’s School of Highland Dancing en Astrid en Vera
van den Berg!
The Clan MacBeth Pipe Band speelde ‘Land of Light’ en ‘The March of King Laois’
samen The MacBeth Folk Band en zangeres Henriëtte Kool-de Groot.
Er was een grote finale met alle bands met danseressen met de tunes Cullen Bay,
El Torques en Hielan Laddie. En er was een vlaggenparade met de vlaggen van de
aanwezige provicies en steden (‘Schotland The Brave’ en ‘Auld Lang Syne’ werden
gespeeld). Traditiegetrouw werd er afgemacheerd op ‘The Geen Hills of Tyrol’ en
‘When The Battle is Over’.
Woorden van dank door de band zijn er:
aan alle sponsoren. In het bijzonder de hoofdsponsoren Oosterberg Elektrotechniek, The Music Show Scotland en Het Wapen van Schotland.
aan alle muzikanten, danseressen en zangeres. En speciale dank alle vrijwilligers
die achter en voor de schermen al het (voorbereidend) werk verrichten. Dan wordt
gesproken over de logistiek, de catering, de verloting, het licht en geluid, de regie
(en de presentatie). Super al die inzet!!

FOR THOSE IN PERIL
Speciaal voor de filmliefhebbers onder ons hebben wij een prachtige speelfilm in
petto.
Vanaf donderdag 16 januari is de Schotse film FOR THOSE IN PERIL, geregisseerd
door de bekroonde regisseur Paul Wright, in de bioscopen te zien en online te bekijken. FOR THOSE IN PERIL is een arthouse film die zich afspeelt in en rond de
wateren van een klein Schots vissersdorp.
Over de film
FOR THOSE IN PERIL vertelt het verhaal van de jonge Aaron. Hij woont in een
klein en afgelegen vissersdorp met een hechte gemeenschap. Wanneer hij als enige
overlevende terugkeert van een mysterieus bootongeluk, waarbij vier vissers en
zijn broer omkomen, wordt hij door de dorpelingen buitengesloten en beschuldigd. Aaron weigert te geloven dat zijn broer is overleden en gaat naar hem op
zoek; aangespoord door bijgeloof en folkloristische tradities.

The Knights Templar
A very brief history
9 knights led by Hugues de Payens went to the King of Jerusalem, Baldwin II, proposing that they form a monastic order of knights, taking vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, for in service of the Holy Land. They were granted part of the
Al-Aqsa Mosque, which was built on the site of the original Temple of Solomon.
Almost immediately they became an enormously rich and powerful organisation.
A few short years after the final loss of the Holy Land, the King of France, Philip
IV, turned his greedy eyes to the wealth of the Templars. He started rumours of
devil-worship and shameful practices by the Templars, used these as an excuse to
try and seize their property.
They were charged with heresy and on a Friday the 13th, in October 1307, Jacques
de Molay, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and 60 of his senior knights
were arrested in Paris. Across Europe thousands of Knights Templar were taken
into custody. But when King Philip raided the Templar treasure house he found it

empty and the fleet gone from Larochelle. Anyone found sheltering a Templar was
under threat of excommunication. At the time Scotland was already excommunicated for Robert the Bruce’s involvement in the murder of John “Red” Comyn.
Since Robert the Bruce could not afford to turn away wealthy and powerful allies
in his struggle against Edward I, it is fanciful to suppose that Scotland welcomed
the homeless knights. French Masonic ritual seems to indicate that Scotland was
designated as the place of refuge for the Templar treasures.

medieval Christian order from accusations of heresy, officials said
Friday. The 300-page volume recently came out in a limited edition - 799 copies - each priced at
$8,377, said Scrinium publishing
house, which prints documents
from the Vatican’s secret archives.

and reinvested, but remained in its owners’ strongboxes within the Order’s treasury, and could not be accessed without the owner’s permission.
The Templar Fleet
The Templars did have ships to carry personnel, pilgrims and supplies across the
Mediterranean between the West and East and back. These would have been heavy
transport vessels rather than warships. Much of the surviving evidence for Templar shipping comes from the relevant port records or royal records giving permission for the export of produce. At La Rochelle on the west coast of France during
the twelfth century the Templars were given several vineyards and produced wine
for their own consumption and for export. This was not a fleet in any modern
sense, they would have been transport vessels not warship.
The legend of the lost treasure of the Templars has its origin in documentary evidence from the trial. John of Châlons, a Templar sergeant, giving evidence at the
trial, said that Gérard of Villiers had been tipped off about the arrests and managed to escape with eighteen galleys which he filled with Templar treasure.
One of the first to link the Templar fleet to Scotland was a Scottish exile in Germany, George Frederick Johnson, said the Templars had sailed to Scotland. Later,
one of his followers said that they landed on the Isle of Mull (land of the Clan
Maclean). Other writers have suggested that following the formal suppression of
the Order in 1312, Templars fled to Scotland where they were welcomed by Robert
the Bruce. These fugitive Templars are said to have aided the Scots at Bannockburn
and found refuge at Rosslyn, where they hid their treasure.
Historians agree that there is no evidence the Templars’ participation in the battle
of Bannockburn. The source of the story comes from reports that the English were
winning until an unknown force joined the Scottish side and forced the English to
retreat. The unknown force is said to have been made up of the exiled Templars.

However, sceptics argue that the story of the Templars at Bannockburn is a romantic myth, and goes back no further than the late 20th Century. It is important
to remember that there had been a Templar presence in Scotland since David I
granted the order lands.

Temple in Midlothian was the main House of the Templars. It is possible that some
Templars managed to escape arrest in France and fled the country. What about
Templar links with Rosslyn? Many authoritative reports acknowledge that the
Templars built Rosslyn. The stories go that the Sinclair family were involved with
Templars, and Sir William Sinclair, using principles of sacred geometry, based the
construction of Rosslyn on the Temple of Solomon.
The first Earl of Orkney, Prince Henry Sinclair, is said to have discovered America
500 years before Columbus. Evidence for this journey comes from the so called
‘Zeno Narrative’, a map published in Venice in 1558 detailing an expedition by
a Prince called ‘Zichmni’, and from carvings in Rosslyn Chapel which are said to
depict plants from the New World that were unknown in Britain at the time of
Rosslyn’s construction. Several of the carvings in the chapel are thought to have
Templar connections, and there are Templar graves in the chapel.

WILLIAM WALLACE 5 August, 1305 was betrayed by Scots knight Sir John
Menteith, who was said to have turned over a bannock (a flat oat-cake) on a tavern
table, a sign to the English that the brigand was among them. Wallace was taken
prisoner, and then tried in a ‘mock trial’ in England. Wallace was paraded, like
an animal through the streets of London, on 23 August, 1305, he stood “trial” in
Westminster Hall as a traitor, charged with breaking his oath of fealty. The fact
that he had never taken such an oath was of no consequence. He was an example
to be set to all of Scotland - to disobey the word of Edward, was to mean death
to any Scot who dared such insolence. He was dragged from Westminster to the
Tower and then Smithfield. He was hanged, cut down whilst still alive, drawn - his
abdomen opened by dull blades, his entrails pulled violently out and burnt before
his own eyes, cruelly emasculated before his pained and dying eyes. After all this,
finally, mercifully he was beheaded. His head was impaled upon a pike and placed
above the London Bridge. His remaining body was further mutilated by being

quartered and was exposed by the open sewer of Newcastle, another at Berwick,
a third at Perth, and the fourth quarter of Scotland’s greatest patriot was put on
display at Aberdeen.
Seven months later, another person finally erupted into Scots history (again let it
be said) ROBERT THE BRUCE.
Bruce would, in time, go on to make Wallace’s dreams of an independent Scotland;
a Scottish people free of English tyranny, oppression and dominance, a reality ... if
only for a time. In 2014 the whole of Scotland (and the world) will remember the
Bruce, indeed we will have special celebrations, re - enacted battles to bring back
those days when, 700 years ago, The Bruce defeated the English at Bannockburn.

CLAN MACLEAN This clan dates back to the period of Scottish history when Robert The Bruce was King of Scots. At that time the Maclean clan did not exist nor
was the name being used. However, in 1296 a certain Gilli Colium mac maoiliosa
whose lineage is given as “son of Moal iose, son of Gille eoin (Gillean)” is identified
as a vassal of Robert Bruce, Lord of Carrick, who became Robert I, King of Scots,
in 1306. This Gilli Colium mac maoiliosa - or Malcolm son of Maoiliose - married
Rignach, a relation of Robert Bruce, Lord of Carrick and from this marriage there
were three sons Donald, Neil and John (Iain Dubh in Gaelic), all appear in the 1326
Exchequer Rolls.
The family link to the Bruce family must have benefited the emergent kindred or
clan now calling itself MacGille eoin (Maclean) as Neil was appointed Constable
of the royal castle of Scraburgh (possibly Tarbet) in 1329, while his elder brother,
Donald, appears to have been a commander of the Kings galleys and John (Iain
Dubh) can be found at Sael (Seil) Castle in Lorn - another royal stronghold. And
so the clan started ...

We return to Perth late afternoon chatting over what we saw. Free time in Perth
this evening.
Saturday 28 June; Stirling/Bannockburn. The main event of the tour; 700 years
after Scotland’s biggest battle, it’s time to experience the battle’s biggest ever reenactment at Bannockburn Live. A spectacular event that will take place from 28

Sunday 29 June; We take a day trip to some of the other locations here in Scotland relating The Bruce. Brander Pass. Here we will give a further insight into what
events took place here In July of 1308. The trip will also feature a visit to St Conan’s Kirk, Loch Awe, where there is an oversized effigy of The Bruce. Superb scenic
sightseeing, this is a day on the road for all to enjoy. Returning to Perth.
Monday 30 June; Today we depart Perth heading for the Borders. We will visit
Dunfermline Abbey, where Bruce lies in state before heading south to our destination; Melrose, where we visit the ruined abbey, here lies the Heart of The Bruce.
The day will end in the Scottish Borders around Melrose.
Tuesday 1 July; Final day of the tour we depart the Borders for Edinburgh. We
will be giving you many suggestions what to do, etc. The driver/guide departs
when you have been dropped to Edinburgh.
Wednesday 2 July; another day/night in Edinburgh, why not visit the castle, see
The Bruce (and Wallace) guarding the entrance! The tour ends in Edinburgh.
TOUR ENDS after breakfast Thursday morning. For those wishing to stay extra nights, we can arrange extra days/nights in Edinburgh or anywhere in Scotland.

Asterix bij de picten
Vanaf 24 oktober 2013 is Asterix bij de Picten in alle boekhandels verkrijgbaar.
De Picten? Ja, de Picten! Dit volk uit het vroegere Schotland bestond uit geduchte
strijders die tot verschillende stammen behoorden. De Romeinen gaven hen de
naam Picten, wat letterlijk ‘beschilderde mensen’ betekent.
In lijn met de traditie van de avonturen van de beroemdste Galliër, is Asterix bij de
Picten een epische reis naar een streek die rijk is aan tradities, en de ontdekking
van een volk wiens culturele verschillen worden vertaald in onvergetelijke grappen
en woordspelingen.
Op de lezersfora worden weddenschappen afgesloten en volgt de ene discussie na
de andere. Whisky? Boomstamwerpers? Doedelzakken? Namen die beginnen met
Mac? Worden de geheimen van de Muur van Hadrianus en van het monster van
Loch Ness eindelijk onthuld? En wie weet, zien we de Galliërs zelfs in Schotse rokken… De spanning is compleet!
Het album is het werk van een nieuwe tekenaar Didier Conrad en van schrijver
Jean-Yves Ferri. Zij maakten de strip nog wel onder verantwoordelijkheid van de
oorspronkelijke tekenaar, de 86-jarige Albert Uderzo.
Asterix bij de Picten kent weer een aantal vaste elementen. Zo wordt er natuurlijk weer gebruik gemaakt van de toverdrank die de helden hun bovenmenselijke
kracht geeft. Het verhaal eindigt in een groot banket met everzwijnen op het bord.
De valszingende bard mag ook aanzitten, maar met een doek om zijn mond.

Isle of mull
The Isle of Mull - or simply Mull - is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides
(after Skye), off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute.
With an area of 875.35 square kilometres (337.97 sq mi) Mull is the fourth largest Scottish island and the fourth largest island surrounding Great Britain. In the
2011 census the usual resident population of Mull was 2,800 a slight rise on the
2001 figure of 2,667 in the summer this is supplemented by many tourists. Much
of the population lives in Tobermory, the only burgh on the island until 1973, and
its capital.
Tobermory is also home to Mull’s only single malt Scotch whisky distillery, Tobermory (formerly Ledaig).
It is widely understood that Mull was inhabited shortly after the end of the last
Ice Age, from around 6000 BC. Bronze Age inhabitants built menhirs, brochs and
a stone circle with examples of burial cairns, cists, standing stones, stone circles,
pottery and knife blades providing compelling evidence.
Between 600 BC to 400 AD Iron Age inhabitants were building protective forts,
duns and crannogs. The early Christian period began in the 6th Century, with 563
AD being a pivotal point as it is believed that Christianity was brought to this part
of northern Britain by St. Columba, when he arrived from Ireland to set up a monastery on the Island of Iona just off the south-west point of Mull.
In the 14th century Mull became part of the Lordship of the Isles. After the collapse
of the Lordship in 1493 the island was taken over by the clan MacLean, and in
1681 by the clan Campbell.
Legend has it that the wreck of a Spanish galleon, laden with gold, lies somewhere
in the mud at the bottom of Tobermory Bay - although the ship’s true identity,

and cargo, are in dispute. By some accounts, the Florencia (or Florida, or San Francisco), a member of the defeated Spanish Armada fleeing the English fleet in 1588,
anchored in Tobermory to take on provisions. Following a dispute over payment,
the ship caught fire and the gunpowder magazine exploded, sinking the vessel. In
her hold, reputedly, was £300,000 in gold bullion. Other sources claim the vessel was the San Juan de Sicilia (or San Juan de Baptista), which, records indicate,
carried troops, not treasure. According to that account, the island’s chief, Lachlan
Mor Maclean, struck a deal with the Spanish commander to reprovision and refit
the ship in return for military intervention on the side of the MacLeans in their
feud with enemies on nearby islands.
Whatever the true story, numerous searches for the wreck, and its rumored treasure, took place from the mid-17th century to the end of the 20th century. No
significant treasure has ever been recovered in Tobermory Bay.
Torosay Castle
In 1773 the island was visited by Samuel Johnson and James Boswell during their
famous Tour of the Western Islands.
During the Highland Clearances in the 18th and 19th centuries, the population fell
from 10,000 to less than 3,000.
The whole island became a Restricted Area during World War II. The bay at Tobermory became a naval base commanded from HMS Western Isles. The base and the
Restricted Area were under Commodore (later Vice Admiral) Sir Gilbert Stephenson, whose strict discipline and ferocious temper earned him the nickname “The
Terror of Tobermory”.
The base was used to train Escort Groups in anti-submarine warfare. 911 ships
passed through the base between 1940 and 1945.
Mull boasts such historic buildings as Duart Castle and Torosay Castle, both open

The mausoleum of Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales from 1809
to 1822, and known as “The Father of Australia”, may be found near his old patrimonial estate in the village of Gruline. Macquarie had been born on the nearby
island of Ulva, ancient seat of clan MacQuarrie.

Scotch Trifle
This is a popular sweet, particularly at Christmas time. The version below is
known as the “Typsy Laird” as it contains sherry and Drambuie liqueur (or
else whisky or brandy).
If you don’t want to be typsy, you can use fruit juice instead. Likewise, if you
don’t want to make your own custard, the commercial variety will do. You can
make your own Ratafia biscuits or use almond flavoured cookies or dried macaroons instead.
Ingredients
6 sponge cakes
Half pound raspberry or strawberry jam
2oz ratafia biscuits
Rind from a lemon, finely grated
Vanilla essence/extract
Quarter pint double (whipping) cream
Flaked browned almonds, glacé cherries, angelica
Quarter pint medium sweet sherry
2 tablespoons Drambuie
Split the sponges, mix with jam and put in a glass dish. Crush the ratafia biscuits
and scatter on top with the lemon rind. Mix the sherry and Drambuie and pour
over the sponges. Leave to soak.
Pour the custard evenly over the sponge etc. Whip the cream until stiff and sweeten a little, if preferred. Spread over the trifle. Sprinkle with flaked almonds, small
ratafia biscuits, sliced angelica. If you have any “hundreds and thousands” confection, sprinkle that on too, just before the trifle is served..

Method
The custard is made by putting the milk and sugar into a saucepan and bringing to
the boil. Mix egg yolks and whites and pour the hot milk over them, stirring well.
Return to the saucepan and stir over a gentle heat with a wooden spoon. When the
custard runs in ribbons down the back of the spoon, strain into a basin and cover
with dampened greaseproof paper to stop a skin forming.

Samen met Han Schoutens van De Whiskyproever uit Ridderkerk in gesprek zijnde
met Aart van der Linde van Us Heit Distillery worden wij onderbroken door Jan
Beek van Van Wees. Vol trots overhandigt hij Aart één van de eerste voor The Ultimate gebottelde flessen Frysk Hynder. Ook voor The Ultimate is dit een primeur,
omdat het voor hen de eerste botteling is van een niet-Schotse distilleerderij en
wordt tijdens het Pot Still Festival 2013 gepresenteerd.
Gelukkig voor ons hebben wij onze glazen net leeg en goed gespoeld en is Jan Beek
niet de beroerdste om ons te laten meegenieten van dit unieke product. De fles is
snel ontkurkt en een stevige sample wordt ingeschonken.
Voortreffelijk!
In tegenstelling tot de eigen bottelingen van Frysk Hynder, is deze niet gefilterd
en op fles gebracht op 46%, hetgeen een lekkere, stevige bite aan de whisky geeft.
Bovendien heeft het destillaat 6 jaar gerijpt op een first fill cognac vat waardoor er
een mooie, volle smaak ontstaat en een heerlijk zoete nasmaak overblijft.

De brouwerij annex stokerij heeft in meer dan 25 jaar tijd faam opgebouwd als
producent van diverse eigenzinnige streekproducten als speciaalbieren, whisky en
koffielikeur. In de productie en aanlevering van grondstoffen wordt zoveel mogelijk gebruik gemaakt van leveranciers uit de omgeving. Het hele productieproces
van onze producten is zodanig ingericht, dat we het hele proces van akkerbouwer
tot consument zelf in de hand hebben. De enige schakel die tot nu toe ontbrak in
deze keten was de hop. Maar ook hiervoor zijn we aan de slag gegaan. Naast het
pand van de brouwerij is een stuk grond ontgonnen, waar Aart van der Linde nu
een hoptuin gaat inrichten. Hij heeft een aantal soorten hopplanten geselecteerd,
die een heerlijke hopbittersmaak, met een fris, ‘kruidig’ hop aroma aan onze Us
Heit bieren zullen geven. De cirkel voor alle ingrediënten, te weten: geselecteerde
granen als gerst en tarwe, hop, zuiver water en biergist, is daarmee rond.

Reeelaaaaxed whisky proeven met 200+ andere whisky enthousiastelingen die allemaal een of meerdere flessen whisky meenemen. 200+ open flessen om vrij van
te proeven. Steek je neus tussen de flessen vind een mooie, speciale of interessante
fles. Schenk een dram in voor je vrienden en voor de mensen die je waarschijnlijk
net een uur geleden ontmoet hebt. Contact maken gaat gemakkelijk, met de mensen op Maltstock heb je in ieder geval 1 gezamelijke passie, Whisky! Een schoolkamp voor volwassenen. All-inclusive, eten, slapen, schots ontbijt, doorlopende
lunch vanaf ontbijt tot avondeten (dat is dus heel de dag), 10 Masterclasses, speciale kampvuur tastings.
Nog geen kaartje? Wees er snel bij, Maltstock is elk jaar uitverkocht. Inmiddels is
meer dan 1\3 van de kaarten al weg. Be there, be fast!
Maltstock is all-inclusive, op vrijdag avond kom je aan. Je parkeert de auto, stalt je fiets
of loopt vanaf de bushalte het festival terein op. Je wordt vriendelijk ontvangen, bedlinnen worden uitgereikt en het kamernummer wordt je toegewezen. Het bed eerst maar
eens opmaken, dat kan maar gebeurd zijn, toch? Nog even afwegen wat verstandig is,
boven of beneden in het stapelbed. Misschien de oplader van de telefoon alvast in het
stopcontact, tandenborstel binnen grijpafstand. Ingewikkeld in een handdoek zit je meegebrachte fles, misschien nog in koker of doos maar het is in ieder geval een fles die je
andere mensen wilt laten proeven. Op de gang hoor je de gezelligheid al, mensen die
elkaar na een jaar op Maltstock weer tegenkomen en voelen dat het als vanouds is. Ze
hebben er zin in.

Inmiddels zijn bijna alle bezoekers binnen, in de gemeenschappelijke ruimte staan tafels vol met flessen, je weet eigenlijk niet waar je beginnen moet. Alles staat doorelkaar.
Met je fles in de hand besluit je om naar een tafel in het midden van de overdekte binnenplaats te lopen en hoopt dat er nog een plekje vrij is. Onderweg vraagt iemand wat
je meegnomen hebt, hij kent de fles niet, is geïnteresseerd en vraagt of hij er aan mag
ruiken. Plop. Hij ruikt, en “heerlijk een sherrybom” zegt hij. Hij stelt zich voor en begint
te vertellen dat hij op sherry gerijpte whisky vaak erg lekker vind. Hij laat je de whisky in
zijn glas ruiken, heerlijke tonen van tropisch fruit. Wat is dat? Balblair 89, hij staat op
die tafel, ik spreek je later. Veel plezier op Maltstock!
Maltstock is het delen van whisky met elkaar maar dat is niet het enige, elk jaar
organiseren we in combinatie met de whiskyindustrie, Masterclasses. Vorig jaar
hadden we er 12. Tien reguliere van o.a. Highland Park, Cadenhead, Glenrothes en
Whisky Shop Dufftown. Bij het kampvuur werden speciale kampvuurtastings georganiseerd door Benriach\Glendronach. In 2014 zullen we zeker onze best doen
deze hoge standaard te evenaren en er misschien zelfs overheen gaan.
We zijn als organisatie al druk aan het brainstormen over nieuwe activiteiten en
kunnen hier in dit stadium nog niet al te veel over kwijt. Echter over een tweetal
activiteiten kunnen we nu al met zekerheid zeggen dat ze op Maltstock 2014 aanwezig zullen zijn:
The return of the midnightsnack
Terug van weggeweest introduceren wij opnieuw de “Midnight Snack”. Festival bezoekers zullen ook na het avondeten voorzien gaan worden van eten in de vorm
van snacks.
Midnight Cafe
Op Maltstock 2014 zal de kapel ongeveer 75 meter verwijderd van het festival
terein omgedoopt worden tot Maltstock’s “Midnight Cafe” Dit cafe zetten we op

omdat crazy partying en slapen niet goed samengaan. Wij vinden het belangrijk
dat iedereen op Maltstock zijn eigen ding kan doen. Is dat slapen, dan moet er goed
geslapen kunnen worden. Is dat feesten, dan moet er goed gefeest kunnen worden.

A joint venture will build a £6.7m distillery in Scotland’s first post-war new town
Glenrothes in the heart of Fife. The partners include the Indian premium drinks
group Kyndal and the Perthshire distiller John Fergus & Co. Ltd. Their plan is to
build a malt distillery with a production capacity of 4 million litres per annum with
a number of bonded warehouses on a 6ha land adjacent to the Whitehill industrial
estate. Members of the Glenrothes area Commitee agreed to the construction in
January 2013. A building application was received by the Fife Council in February

Distillation is planned to start in 2015: Production will continue 24 hours a day,
7 days a week for 48 weeks a year. Their intention is to produce whisky which is
going mainly to export markets such as India, Africa and the Far East. The distillery will be located just south of Fife airport. Fifteen new jobs will be created. There
is no visitor centre planned. Rumours have it that the distillery will be named Inchdairnie. The present John Fergus & Co. managing director will be Ian Palmer
who has worked with Glen Turner Distillery near Edinburgh. Information: Kyndal

Voor de 4de keer is het Holiday Inn IJmuiden Seaport Beach Hotel het decor voor
Whisky & Rum aan Zee met een groeiend aantal gasten uit binnen en buitenland.
De hele bovenste etage stond ter beschikking van dit unieke evenement met een
prachtig uitzicht op de jachthaven, duinen en de zee.
Het aangeboden assortiment bestond uit ruim 500 vooral Schotse Single malt
whisky’s, whisky likeuren, Japanse whisky’s en Bourbons, vertegenwoordigd door
het grootste gedeelte van de Nederlandse importeurs.
Uiteraard was ook Schots restaurant Hielander aanwezig met hun ongeëvenaarde
gerookte Schotse zalm en oesters, evenals o.a. ‘The Whisky Couple’ Hans en Becky
Offringa, Jock Shaw van Bresser & Timmer, Jan Beek van Van Wees, Ronald
Zwartepoorte van Whisky Passion, Dennis Mulder en Ronald Anneveldt van Diageo en Erik Molenaar van Kintra.
Leuke extra’s waren de culinaire stands van o.a. De Santpoortse Verleiding met
chocolade, Toko JenAu met Surinaamse tapa’s en Vlaai & Co. met Rum en Whisky
infused vlaaien.
Tevens presenteerden diverse importeurs met een 150-tal kwalitatieve rums uit
het gehele Caribisch gebied zich. Ook liefhebbers van cocktails en van Cubaanse
sigaren kwamen ruim aan hun trekken.

kwalitatieve inzendingen, 58 rums ingezonden door 21 importeurs die streden in
de 6 categorieën”.
Voorafgaand aan de zeer druk bezochte middagsessie van de 8e editie van ‘Whisky
& Rum aan Zee werden de zes ‘Best in Class Awards’ en zes ‘Golden Awards’
uitgereikt door de Cubaanse ambassadeur Mevr. Dominguez Cortina in bijzijn
van Burgemeester F. Weerwind, wethouder A. Verkaik van Velsen en de vele rum
importeurs. Allen waren blij verrast door het grote aanbod aan rum op dit unieke
festival. Voor de ambassadeur met name het aanbod in Cubaanse rum!
De deskundige vakjury heeft alle ingezonden rums blind geproefd en beoordeeld
op helderheid, aroma, smaak en afdronk.
Rum is een groeiende markt en voor velen een nog te ontdekken product. Whisky
& Rum aan Zee is het enige festival in Nederland waar men ruim 150 soorten rum
en 500 soorten whisky kan proeven. Er wordt teruggekeken op een zeer succesvol
evenement met bijna 1000 bezoekers.

Crabbie’s Ginger Beer is gemaakt naar een heel oud, geheim recept, de firma Crabbie’s is opgericht in 1801 in het Schotse Leith. Vandaag de dag maken ze bij Crabbie’s diverse varianten Ginger Beer, met en zonder alcohol. In Nederland zijn er nu
al vijf verschillende Crabbie’s op de markt, Allereerst de traditionele Cloudy, alcoholvrij, en de meest bekende; de Alcoholic Ginger Beer met 4% alcohol. Daarnaast
zijn er sinds kort ook de smaken Strawberry / Lime, Raspberry en Spiced Orange,
allen met 4% alcohol. Alle varianten zijn overigens glutenvrij.
De benaming bier is misleidend omdat men het drankje maakt van verse gember, 4
geheime kruiden en suiker. De verse gember hakt men in kleinere stukken en vergist vervolgens spontaan in een vat met water en suiker, gember is van zichzelf rijk
aan gisten en melkzuur, de vergisting duurt ruim 6 weken. Daarna maakt men een
mengsel met kruiden, citroen, water en verse gember en mengt dat met het uitgegiste gembernat, na een korte rustperiode is het alcoholische Ginger Beer klaar om
gebotteld te worden. Het belangrijkste verschil met het alcoholvrije Cloudy Ginger

Beer is dat daar geen gegist gembernat aan toegevoegd wordt. Gemberbier is veel
pittiger en dieper van smaak dan bijvoorbeeld Ginger Ale.
Ginger Beer is als drankje populair geworden tijdens de drooglegging in de Verenigde staten, uiteraard gaat het dan over de niet alcoholische variant. Ook in Suriname is deze variant zeer populair. Het Schotse Crabbie’s alcoholic Ginger Beer
wordt vooral in de U.K. veel verkocht. Men drinkt het puur, met ijs of als mix met
whisky of rum. Het is een verfrissende dorstlesser met een stevige bite. Gemixt
met whisky of rum, met een schijf citroen of met een paar ijsblokjes is het een
verrassend lekker drankje.

Distillery. From here driving through scenic countryside to Wick, staying at a good

Day 5; taking a ferry back to the mainland, we head south to Glen Ord Distillery! A

The autumn whisky season always brings some very interesting new releases and
we are proud to present our latest Limited Edition Arran Malt - The Millennium
Casks which will be available to purchase from our web shop from Monday 28th
October. So, what’s the story behind this dram?
The turn of the new millennium was a time for both reflection and anticipation.
Do you remember how you celebrated it? This bottling is a whisky snapshot of this
particular point in history. While the world partied and marked the turn of the century, the stills at Arran continued to produce the Single Malt that would be making
its way throughout the world in years to come, representing this small Scottish
island in all corners of the globe. The Millennium Casks bottling is a limited edition
expression of 7,800 bottles of The Arran Single Malt inspired by a unique moment
in time. It is a memorable mix of 35 Bourbon Barrels and 10 Sherry Hogsheads
filled at the turn of the new millennium on 31st December 1999 and 1st January
2000. The whisky has been matured at The Isle of Arran Distillery for 13 years and
has been bottled at cask strength and without chill-filtration. We have chosen a
very particular image to adorn this bottling as you will see on the front label and
gift box of this edition. The Roman God ‘Janus’ is the protector of this particular
amber nectar from our distillery. In ancient Roman myth, Janus was the God of
beginnings, endings and transitions. He was said to be blessed with the ability to
look into the past and see the future and as such he is usually depicted as having
two faces. Indeed the month of January was named so by the Romans as a nod to
this well-loved figure, who had a ubiquitous presence in their important ceremonies and life events. We think he is the perfect person to represent the true spirit
of this evocative dram. James MacTaggart, our Master Distiller explains: “So much
of what we do is measured by the passing of time, given the maturation of spirit.
The Millennium Casks edition covers a unique period that none of us will see again.
Hence we’re encouraging people to reflect and also look ahead to the future whilst
enjoying a dram with friends! We feel that this bottling is the perfect example of
our forward thinking independent character which remains true to its roots.”

Sinds 18 oktober 2012 heeft whiskyminnend Nederland er weer een prachtige
whiskybar bij. Eigenaar is gastheer en whiskyconnaisseur Wim Wamelink, bekend
van onder andere zijn eerste bar de Heerenkamer die hij met zijn hotel eind 2010
verkocht heeft. Voor zijn grote whiskycollectie die hij nog steeds in bezit had zocht
hij een nieuwe plek en die is nu gevonden. De nieuwe bar heet de MasterClass Bar
en is gelegen in het plaatsje ’t Loo Oldebroek, 10 km ten zuidwesten van Zwolle. De
bar is in het pand van horeca interieurbouwer Inris die het als showroom gebruikte. Een prachtige bar in oud Engelse stijl met een buffetbar, fraaie lambrisering,
luxe fauteuils en zitjes voor maximaal 45 gasten. Het decor is de indrukwekkende
whiskycollectie van meer dan 300 verschillende whiskyflessen. Dit is de passie van
Wim Wamelink die als whiskyconnaisseur dagelijks proeverijen biedt, vaak op locatie, maar nu vooral in zijn eigen whiskybar. De bar is besloten dus bezoeken
kan alleen na reservering. Maar men is alle dagen van de week al welkom vanaf 2
gasten als Very Important Proevers. Als gastheer pur sang zoekt Wamelink altijd
gul de whisky’s uit die passen bij de wensen van de gast en de sfeer van de middag/
avond.
Deze bar is tevens een perfecte plek voor besloten bijeenkomsten als jubilea, recepties, presentaties en bijeenkomsten zowel informeel als zakelijk. Er zijn tal van
mogelijkheden voor diners, activiteiten en overnachtingen in de omgeving waar
mee wordt samengewerkt om een bezoek compleet te maken.

Een nieuwe stap

Het maken van het Schotland Digizine is elke keer een uitdaging.
Een uitdaging waar hopelijk veel mensen plezier van hebben en er
nuttige informatie uit kunnen halen.
Hiernaast is het voor mij een leuke hobby, want ik ben zelf erg
geïnteresseerd in Schotland en whisky.
Tekenen, (be)schilderen, illustreren, fotograferen, ontwerpen en/
of vormgeven van o.a.:
geboortekaartjes, trouwkaarten, rouwkaarten, kerst- en andere
kaarten, logo’s en huisstijlen, verpakkingen, stansvormen,
(digitale) banners, buitenreclame, autobelettering, t-shirts,
websites, webwinkels, (onze eigen) trouwringen, (kilt)pins,
standinrichting, decors, muren, CD-hoezen, tattoeage-ontwerpen,
bodypainting, bellypainting en tartans (Schotse ruiten).
Voor mijn dagelijkse boterham, echter, ben ik werkzaam in een
branche waarin helaas grote slagen gestreden worden.
Als gepassioneerde creatieveling - in de ruimste zin van beide
woorden - stel ik mij daarom, met het oog op de toekomst, open
voor het nemen van een nieuwe stap.
Naast mijn creatieve achtergrond van tekenen, schilderen, illustreren, fotograferen, ontwerpen en vormgeven - alles zowel ‘analoog’ als digitaal - ben ik bekend met het bouwen en onderhouden
van websites en webwinkels en heb ik een brede algemene kennis
en een meer gerichtere kennis van (sterke) dranken, met name
toegespitst op whisky.
De stap die ik derhalve graag zou nemen, zou in één van die richtingen gaan. ‘Creatief met whisky’ zou de meest ideale combinatie
zijn ;-)

Creatief bezig zijn, het uitgeven van het Schotland Digizine,
reizen, Schotland en whisky - en mij hierbij dan graag verdiepen
in de geschiedenis en bijhouden van de huidige ontwikkelingen
- en whisky verzamelen zijn mijn passies (naast mijn vrouw en
kinderen).

In 2006 heb ik een persoonlijke tartan ontworpen, de Ellenée en
in 2007 de Whisky Tartan (de Schotse ruit die het verhaal van
[het maken] van whisky vertelt). Eind 2009 heb ik op verzoek een
tartan voor een trouwerij ontworpen, de Amstartan. Mijn laatste
ontwerp, in 2012, is de Whiskey & Bourbon Tartan. Alle vier
genoemde tartans zijn in Schotland geregistreerd en geweven.
