An agricultural workers cottage where the two Rui sisters, Ingerine and Gurine lived. The Rui sisters became famous in Norway when they were invited to meet the king in Oslo. At Dalen Tourist information you will find information about the place with maps, showing the cultural path that leads up to Rui. www.visitdalen.com EIDSBORG STAVE CHURCH As a gathering place at the entrance to Vest-Telemark Museum, lies Eidsborg Stave Church from the 13th century, dedicated to St. Nicolaus (or Nikuls as he is known in Telemark), the guardian angel of travellers. Here the guide will tell you exciting stories about this building and cultural heritage from the area. See also West Telemark Museum Eidsborg. Ph. +47 35 06 90 90. www.vest-telemark.museum.no DALEN HOTEL The opening of the Telemark Canal led to the building of the stately Dalen Hotel, which has been an important connecting point for tourists travelling between east and west Norway. Built in 1894 by the architect Halldor Børve, it is of special interest being in the Norwegian “Dragon style”. With dragonheads, spires and towers, it reminds us of the palaces of fairy tales. In 1994 it was restored to its original form at the time of King Oscar, but it has all of the modern facilities tourists enjoy today. Recently the hotel park along the shores of Lake Bandak was also redeveloped, giving a magnificent view over the water. The hotel is renowned for its quality kitchen and relaxed “old fashioned” atmosphere. www.dalenhotel.no WHETSTONES FROM EIDSBORG For 1000 years, Tokke has had an export industry. The stones were carried in rowboats down the Telemark Canal, or carried on horseback on the ice to the coast and shipped abroad where they were sold at a good price. In this way the quarry at Eidsborg has supplied the timber industry and hand workers at home and abroad with good whetstones. Take a walk from the stave church in Eidsborg to the old stone quarry. www.vest-telemark.museum.no 6 Eidsborg Stave Church RAVEN GORGE Since tourists first began coming to Tokke the Raven Gorge has been a source of fascination and awe. The gorge has a 350-meter sheer drop down to the river Tokke below! The Raven Gorge has an unusual air current, which makes it possible to throw a banknote over the edge and have it blown back by the wind rising up the face of the cliff! www.visitdalen.com Kviteseid Folk Museum > NISSEDAL NATURAL WATER PARK: LARGE POT HOLES The water has formed a large piece of artwork in the south of Nissedal. Rows of pot-holes create nature’s own water park. The river Fyresåna has whirled around stones and gravel in the riverbed over time, later becoming regulated for electricity production. Before electricity production and dam building started, the pot-holes were a well-protected secret under the water. Some of them are 10 meters wide and deep, and perfect for swimming and diving. This natural phenomenon is southernmost in the county, by the tiny village of Eikhom, 10 km from the Telemark Road, road 41 (Telemarksvegen). Turn off at Haugsjåsund Family Camping (Haugsjåsund Familiecamping) and follow the signs. Toll gates exist on this road. ROCK SLOPES By Lake Nisser you can sunbathe on polished rock slopes. Nissedal is one of three inland counties that boasts rock slopes like those on the beaches of Southern Norway. Enthusiastic mountain-bikers have discovered their paradise in the mountains of Nissedal, where they can bike on dry slopes over long distances. Pot holes ROCK PAINTINGS The rock paintings along the western side of the lake Nisser are very special and rare. The man and animal figures are probably made by scraping off oxidized iron from the rocks. It’s difficult to get to these paintings. In fact, you must go by boat to see them. OLD GRAVE FIELDS At Røyrodden in Treungen, on the eastern side of Nisser, you will find some of the typical watercourse grave-mounds of Telemark. You can have a good look at them from the seaside. Not far from Røyrodden lies another grave field with 15 mounds of variable size. The graves are situated in a beautiful cultural landscape near one of the oldest farms in the community, Årak. Here you will also find the remains of the Årak oak, probably the oldest tree in Nissedal. At Fjone there is a grave field with nine large, well preserved mounds in open pinewoods. > FYRESDAL VISIT KVIPT GJESTEGARD Kvipt offers traditional Norwegian meals, canoe rentals, grocery store and fishing/hunting permits. All raw ingredients were salted, dried and smoked, before electricity and freezers appeared. Some hotels, in Byrte, for example, were the exception. There they chopped blocks of ice and made cooling rooms of ice and sawdust in order to keep meat and fish cold. In practice that means that meat broth, has been and still is a staple meal. It was practical, fed many and tasted good. What we see today is that this food has changed status over the last decade, from being relatively simple farmer’s food to becoming a highly regarded and sought-after meal.” 22 CRISPBREAD FROM MORGEDAL For many generations people have enjoyed the aroma from the warm kitchen together with the sound of the rolling pin passing forwards and back over the crispbread dough, and of course the taste is fantastic! www.skreppa.no THAT WAS PORRIDGE of the right kind, that was. The seeds stood with spikes just like bristle on a pig’s back and black it was as ash pudding. > AASMUND OLAVSSON VINJE FROM FERDAMINNI FROM THE SUMMER OF 1860 The workers at “Skreppa” give you all this. LOCAL FISH FROM WESTERN TELEMARK Aketun Fisk, located on the western side of Lake Fyresvatn makes a variety of delicious fish dishes. Their products can also be bought at a number of grocery stores in Western Telemark, along with other local products. If you prefer to try and smoke your own fish, please see Bodil Nordjore’s recipe below. www.aketunfisk.no SMOKED TROUT There are two methods of smoking trout: • Warm smoking – here the fish is both cooked a little and • smoked at the same time. You can use a small “aburøyk”box. They are very popular and the temperature can be as high as 85 degrees. Cold smoking – here you must let someone who has the right equipment do the smoking for you, as it involves the use of a stove with a long chimney pipe to cool the smoke, before it is led into the smoking chamber. The temperature should not be over 22 degrees, and the stove must be “fired” several times to achieve the desired result and taste. Here in the west of the county it is usual to burn wood from the “Brisk” bush to smoke the fish. In some places they use dry wood, whilst others prefer to use raw wood. In my opinion it is easiest to use raw wood. Before you smoke the fish it must be salted. In my opinion it is best to let the fish lie in a bowl with salt inside the head and body as well as on the outside. You may also like to use a little pepper. Let the fish stand in the salt for about a day, and remove the salt and any moisture before smoking. Snowboarders stand on the edge of the precipice, ready for reckless off-piste over the rugged outcrop. Southern Norway meets high mountain, new meets old – in Western Telemark. Folk culture lives on from the past to the present, from Jørgen Tjønnstaul to Knut Buen, from Sondre Norheim to Terje Håkonsen, from the travelling storyteller to Tone Jorunn Tveito and Odd Nordstoga. n TOKKE / DALEN GRIMDALSTUNET ART GALLERY On the road from Tokke to Setesdal is the home of the sculptress Anne Grimdalen (1899 – 1961).
