PAINTING AND ARCHITECTURE
America was a plural territory, of great geographical
diversity, where a local population existed with multiple
cultures and religions. The goal was beyond settling in the
territory, it was reducing the peninsular plurality and giving
unit to the American territory. It begins this way the
evangelization labor of conversion to the Christianity and
the installing of the Spanish as the unique language.


Commonly referred to as Gregorio Vasquez, was a
Colombian painter, including the Quitenian Miguel de
Santiago, was one of the leading artist in the Latin
American Baroque movement, which extended from
the mid 17th to the late 18th century in the
Viceroyalty of New Granada. Most of the artwork of
Vazquez depicts the life of Christ, Virgin Mary, the
Saints and scenes of the New Testament.
Vazquez was born in Bogotá, in a criollo family of
Andalusian origin. The Vasquez family emigrate from
Seville, Spain in the 16th century. He received art
classes in the St Bartolome College and as apprentice
of the painter Baltasar de Vargas Figueroa.
In 1701 Vasquez went to jail due to his involvement
with the kidnapping of Doña María Teresa de Orgaz
from the Santa Clara Convent. When he left the jail, he
was in deep poverty and went insane, never painting
again. Finally, he died in 1711 in Bogotá. In 1863 the
Colombian government placed a commemorative
plaque in the house where Vasquez was born and died
(Calle 11 No. 3-99).

The new task of the
Spanish will be the
evangelization. For it , they
will construct numerous
convents.

The conventual program is
formed by a church, a
monastery, a cloister and
an atrium. They are the
same elements that make
up the European convents,
but in America, The scale
of the monastery and of
the church diminishes and
the parts that did not exist
in Europe acquire an
immense development like
the atrium, which gets
accommodated to the
indigenous habit of
receiving the ceremonies
outdoors. In them also it
was catechized and the
handcrafted offices were
taught.
Along the 16th century
also numerous cathedrals
will be constructed since
in the principal cities of
the New Spain Episcopal
dioceses are established.
They can appreciate
already Renaissance
features and mannerist,
like in The Cathedral of
Mexico That is located in
the square and gets up
partly of the old solar of
the Major Aztec Temple.
The Spanish occupation spread to Colombia,
Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia (Empire Inca).
Example of it they are Tunja's Cathedral in
Colombia, Quito cathedral´s in Ecuador, cathedral
of Lima or the peregrination Sanctuary of
Copacabana.

The Baroque came from the hand of the Counter-reformation
or catholic revival, due to the great influence that had in
Spain.
Some of the most out-standing baroque examples are Holy
Prisca of Tasco and Tepotzotlán's Church in Mexico. Holy
Prisca has cylindrical columns, salomonicas, a great central
medallion, clock and statues. Other works are the Cathedral,
the Palace of Government and the Convent of San Francisco in
Lima, Peru.
