Cell Organization & Membranes Pre-Class Worksheet
Fill out this worksheet as you complete your pre-class assignments (“The Complexity of Identity” Reading, Textbook
Sections 2.5 (‘Lipids are Hydrophobic Molecules’ only); Ch. 3 Intro; 3.1; 3.2; 3.4; 3.5). Bring your completed worksheet to
class to use as a reference for in-class activities.
After completing your pre-class assignments, you should be able to:
• Discuss aspects of your personal identity that contribute to how you show up in our classroom.
• Communicate how your personal identity shapes interactions in our learning environments.
• Identify the structures of different lipids: triglycerides, fatty acids, phospholipids, and cholesterol.
• Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
• Describe the structure of the plasma membrane and the different ways that proteins can be associated with the
lipid bilayer.
• Compare and contrast the organization of prokaryotic/eukaryotic cells and plant/animal cells.
• Define the terms organelle, cytoplasm, and cytosol.
• Describe the function of common eukaryotic organelles: mitochondria, chloroplast, nucleus, endoplasmic
reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosome, and vacuole.
1. Why is it important to critically reflect on our identities when working in collaborative learning environments?
It helps us combat any prejudice to provide an equal opportunity for all as well as foster a better
understanding of our differences while working together.
2. How might an understanding of your own complex identity positively shape how you interact with your peers this
quarter?
I believe by everyone sharing their identity and who we are as a person, it would help us peers
understand everyone better and feel more comfortable too.
3. Sections 2.5 and 3.2 describe several different types of lipid molecules. Several of these lipid molecules are shown
below. Label each molecule as a triglyceride, fatty acid, phospholipid, or cholesterol.

4. Examine the phospholipid molecule shown in the previous question. This phospholipid contains one saturated fatty
acid and one unsaturated fatty acid. Label each fatty acid on the diagram above and then briefly explain how you
were able to distinguish them from each other.
saturated fatty acid have a single bond
unsaturated has one or more double bond and are loosely packed
5. Refer to figure 3.9 in your textbook. Then, on the diagram shown at right, label
whether each protein (a-e) is a “peripheral” or “integral” membrane protein.
Are any of these proteins “transmembrane” proteins?
peripheral: c, d
integral: a, b, e, f
a & b are transmembrane
6. In 1972 two biologists proposed the “fluid mosaic model” to describe the structure of cell membranes. What do the
terms “fluid” and “mosaic” mean in reference to the structure of cell membranes?
uid: the exibility and mobility of the lipids and protein in the membrane
mosaic: the mixture of proteins and lipids
7. Define each of the terms below.
Organelle: help split the cells contents into smaller spaces specialized for different
functions
Cytoplasm: contents of the cell other than the nucleus
Cytosol: jelly-like internal environment of the cell that surrounds the organelles
8. Using textbook sections 3.4 and 3.5 as references, label the following organelles on the diagram below: nucleus,
mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, lysosome. Briefly describe each organelle’s function in the cell.

9. The diagram above (Question 6) is an animal cell. How is this cell different from a typical prokaryotic cell?
An animal cell has a nucleus, is larger, has cholesterol in the membrane, and allows transcription & translation
to occur unlike a prokaryotic cell.
10. The diagram above (Question 6) is an animal cell. How is this cell different from a typical plant cell?
Animal Cell:
• no cell wall
• no chloroplast
• smaller vacuole
Plant Cell:
• has a cell wall
• has chloroplast
• has larger vacuoles
