Periodic signals and Fourier series
We have already seen that a signal ๐ฅ(๐ก) is periodic if there exists a ๐ such that ๐ฅ(๐ก) =
๐ฅ(๐ก + ๐๐) for all ๐ก and for all integers ๐.
The smallest ๐, i.e., the smallest repetition period, is called the fundamental period Tโ.
The fundamental frequency is
๐โ = 1/๐โ
The fundamental frequency fโ is the largest frequency such that
๐โ = ๐ ๐โ
where ๐โ is the ๐๐กโ harmonic of ๐โ.
Examples: Find ๐โ and ๐ปโ
Example 1: Consider ๐๐๐ (40๐๐ก)
๐โ = 20 ๐ป๐ง and ๐โ = 1/๐โ = 0.05 ๐
Example 2: Consider ๐ ๐๐(๐๐ก + ๐/4)
๐โ = 0.5 ๐ป๐ง and ๐โ = 2 ๐
Example 3: Consider ๐๐๐ ²(4๐๐ก)
For ๐๐๐ (4๐๐ก), the fundamental period is ๐0 = 0.5 ๐ .
Using the trigonometric identity: ๐๐๐ ²(๐) =
we obtain ๐๐๐ ²(4๐๐ก) =
1 + ๐๐๐ (2๐)
2
,
1 + ๐๐๐ (8๐๐ก)
2
Thus, the fundamental frequency is ๐โ = 4 ๐ป๐ง and the
fundamental period ๐โ = 0.25 ๐ .
Example 4: Given the sum of sinusoids ๐๐๐ (24๐๐ก) + ๐๐๐ (40๐๐ก) + ๐๐๐ (120๐๐ก)
The corresponding frequencies are 12 ๐ป๐ง, 20 ๐ป๐ง, and 60 ๐ป๐ง, respectively.
If
๐โ = ๐ ๐โ,

then ๐โ is the greatest common divisor (gcd) of the harmonic frequencies ๐โ.
In this case,
๐โ = 4 ๐ป๐ง
because
๐โ = 3๐โ = 12 ๐ป๐ง
๐โ
= 5๐โ = 20 ๐ป๐ง
๐โโ
= 15๐โ = 60 ๐ป๐ง.
Therefore, the fundamental period is ๐โ = 1/๐โ = 1/4 ๐
A sum of harmonics of a common frequency, given by the fundamental frequency
๐โ, is a periodic signal.
In mathematical terms,
๐
๐ฅ(๐ก) = Σ๐=−๐
๐โ ๐ ๐2๐๐ ๐0 ๐ก
where ๐โ = ๐๐โ is the ๐๐กโ harmonic.
Fourier series
Any periodic signal can be constructed from a (possibly infinite) sum of harmonic
sinusoids.
When ๐ → ∞, the previous expression becomes the Fourier series of ๐ฅ(๐ก), i.e.,
∞
๐ฅ(๐ก) = Σ๐=−∞

Example: A rectified sine wave
Consider the following signal
๐ฅ(๐ก) = |๐ ๐๐ (
2๐๐ก
)|
๐1
The original sine wave has
period ๐โ, but taking its absolute
value causes the waveform to
repeat twice during each original
period.
Therefore,
๐โ =

The Fourier coefficients of ๐ฅ(๐ก) are given by

−๐ ๐ ๐ก
∫ |๐ ๐๐ (
)| ๐ ๐0 ๐๐ก

Since
|๐ ๐๐ (

)| ≥ 0
๐1
we can remove the absolute value brackets and rewrite ๐๐ as

Solving the integrals and because (1 − 2๐) and (1 + 2๐) are always odd for all ๐, the
evaluated exponential terms give −1.
Then, the Fourier coefficients are given by
๐โ =

๐(1 − 4๐ 2 )
and the Fourier series of the rectified sine wave ๐ฅ(๐ก) is given by

๐ฅ(๐ก) = Σ๐=−∞

Note that the first few coefficients are
๐โ = 2/๐
๐±1 = −2/(3๐)
๐±2 = −2/(15๐)
๐±3 = −2/(35๐)
The spectrum of ๐ฅ(๐ก), therefore, contains components at
… , −3๐โ, −2๐โ, −๐โ, 0, ๐โ, 2๐โ, 3๐โ, …
with amplitudes given by the Fourier coefficients ๐๐ .
