The money I earned from the small office job was all I had when I remembered the
festive season was coming up, getting a big present for Della was all that mattered. Something
that would please her. On Christmas eve, nothing would ever be on the doorstep of our cracked
concrete porch. The working days pass and I walk all around town on the ruptured cobblestone
walkways looking for the best gift to bargain for. What would make Della smile as warm as a
summer day? Would a dress as bright as the stars make her happy? Of course, it would, but
money was the problem, we couldn’t even afford our flat for the next month, it had to b
e within the budget.
Jim takes a sigh and descends onto the bench. I take out my watch and check the time,
wondering if I have enough even to afford a decent gift. Though it was his last choice he
decided to sell his iconic platinum pocket watch, it had the same shine it had when he first
received it, it was worth much. Coincidentally a woman walking by was looking through the
glass display to find a perfect watch for his husband. Jim walks up to the madam and asks,
“Would you like to buy this fine platinum pocket watch? It would be a great present for a great
price!” As the woman nods, she takes out the coins needed to make this purchase. Once Jim
secured the money he handed the specimen and headed off to a woman’s shop, he walked
passed aisles and aisles trying to look for the most perfect item that would suit Della and her
exquisite taste. The best feature about her is her long luscious golden hair, it always gets
tangled and she did say she needed a comb. Jim asked around until he found the perfect
bamboo comb, it may have been on the pricy side but anything for Della, Jim thought.
“May I purchase this comb?” Jim asks.
“Yes you may, it will be exactly $21, Sir.” The cashier replies back. Once Jim got the
present he paced back home to meet Della at 7 O’clock. I walked through the shabby front
doors and into the room Della was in, she felt different and once she turned around she looked
different as well, her long mane-like hair was nowhere to be found, and she had shoulder-length
hair. My emotions were all over the place, no one would be able to pinpoint what I was feeling
when I walked into the space. Others may be worried about your partner's hair, but all I could
think about is the gift I had been waiting to give Della, her comb to pair with her luscious hair. I
couldn’t be mad for my love for her was beyond how much the comb cost. Suddenly Della took
out a platinum chain that would pair with my sold pocket watch, I was in disbelief.
“This is my Christmas gift to you,” Della asked, “Do you not like it?” The room was silent
as I took out my gift for her.
“I sold my pocket watch to buy this gift but I see you have cut your hair,” I spoke. Della’s
expression was shaken.
“I sold my hair to buy this chain, it matched the pocket watch you always carried on you,
I thought this would be a perfect gift!”
As we settle down we agreed to put the items away until they would be of use.
