Our lab procedure for each experiment
The materials used for each experiment (The unique ones like the faraday cage)
The control vs the experimental group in each experiment
The goal for each experiment
The scientific background for each experiment
The reasons behind choosing the animal model for each experiment.
Be able to interpret any given graph and to draw conclusions based on the graphs.
Utilize the correct t-test (paired, unpaired, one tailed, two tailed)
Analyze T-tests results.
➢ The circulatory system lab- blackworms:
o The function of the circulatory system
o The animal model used and reasons for using it. Why is it a model organism?
o Competitive inhibition
o The molecular background on competitive inhibition
o Antagonists vs Agonists
o Caffeine and its effects on the circulatory system (know the molecular mechanism- what
receptor does it bind to? What are the effects of binding?)
o Nicotine and its effects on the circulatory system (know the molecular mechanism- what
receptor does it bind to? What are the effects of binding?)
➢ Nervous system 1
o Animal model used and the reasons for using it.
o The anatomy of an earthworm. (Be able to identify AND name the anterior, posterior,
clitellum, etc)
o How is an action potential generated and propagated?
o The materials used and set up for the experiment.
➢ Nervous system II
o The cable theory
o Signal decay. The strength of the decay depends on two factors. What are they?
o How to fight signal decay?
▪ Ion channels, Length constant (Rm and Ri), Time constant
▪ Do NOT need to know in detail
o Which ends of the worms transmits signal about LGN vs. MGN
o The size of the nerves/axons
o Interpretation of data
o T-test calculations (be able to provide t-calc, t-crit, D.F [paired = n-1 , unpaired n1 + n2 –
2])
➢ Pig dissection
o Animal model used.
o Anatomical direction
o Labeling structures
o Being able to identify female vs. male pigs
➢ Transpiration Lab
o What is transpiration?
o What is the rate of transpiration?
o How did we eliminate some of the resistances?
o Humidity and light effects on transpiration
o How do both factors (combined) work to affect transpiration?
o Our Experimental design for transpiration
o Graph analysis.
➢ Flower Anatomy
o The anatomical structure of a flower
o Ancient vs modern (derived) traits.
o Complete vs Incomplete flowers
o Inferior vs. superior ovary
➢ Population Ecology Lab
o Population size, what affects population size?
o Graphic representation of logistical vs exponential model.
o Definitions of common terms
o Mathematical questions (Study the questions we went over in class)
o Applying your comprehensive understanding of each module to answer questions about
population growth rate and size.
➢ Inwood Hill Park Trip
o Know all the definitions in the lab manual, especially the ones we went through during
the field trip
