Inauthentic Advertising (Chapter 3 – Authenticity)
Influencer-driven social media advertising, in which celebrities endorse goods that are at odds
with their well-established personal brand or way of life, is an example of a current commercial
that exhibits inauthenticity. These commercials frequently make an effort to seem impromptu or
"relatable," yet the highly planned appearance and lack of any connection to the product give the
message a fake vibe. Hey Whipple, Squeeze This claims that these kinds of advertisements don't
work because viewers are becoming more perceptive to dishonesty and can quickly spot fake
authenticity.
“Embracing the Suck” (Chapter 3)
The Old Spice "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" campaign is an example of a commercial
that exemplifies the idea of "Embracing the Suck." The campaign embraced exaggerated humor,
absurdity, and self-awareness rather than standard, polished masculine scent advertising. The
advertisement was able to stand out and engage viewers by embracing the awkwardness of being
unusual and even absurd. This supports Sullivan's claim that effective advertising frequently
results from fully embracing a daring concept, even if it seems hazardous or flawed.
