Lesson 4 Part 4: Assignment: Source Analysis!
Instructions: Please view the source below and complete the assignment that follows:
Source:
Considering the source, write a response in paragraph form in which you:
1. interpret the source, explain the ideological perspective(s) presented,
AND
2. discuss the links between the principles of globalization (concepts from the course) and the
source
Please write your response and edit your writing, and then log into the Moodle class site and post your
response in the chart. Please remember to include (your name), and use specific course vocabulary!
Also, your response must be at least 175 words in length, and preferably in the
range of 200 words.
Note: You may want to start your response with the statement: “The ideological perspective of the
source is that …. (refer to a specific concept(s) here) is …(explain the perspective or belief about the
concept here).
Therefore, a statement like: The ideological perspective is legacies of historical globalization would be
invalid because this only identifies a concept (legacies of historical globalization), and not a perspective
about that concept.
However, a statement like: The ideological perspective is that legacies of historical globalization can
persist, even after it seems like they have been addressed, would be a valid statement because it both
identified the concept (legacies of historical globalization), and a perspective/belief (can persist even
after they have been addressed).
IMPORTANT: When completing your analysis, you need to go back through the text to examine the
historical context of the source, and to consider what specific concepts from the course are related to
the source. Then ask yourself, what does the source suggest about these concepts? How is the
historical context (background) relevant to the underlying meaning of the source? Do not discuss the
source off the top of your head, you need to go back through what you studied – in this lesson and
previous lessons, and make specific connections between the source and what was studied. Use specific
terminology from the course in your response.
Hopefully this helps you to understand how to both identify the idea (concept) and perspective about
that concept.
To review:
Examine the source to identify evidence to present in your final response. How do details in the
source support your interpretation of its perspective?
Review lesson notes to identify the topic, historical details, and historical context the source
addresses. How can you show that you know this material and can use it to explain the source’s
perspective?
Bring these steps together: write a central idea in a topic sentence. What belief or idea about
the lesson concept is the source presenting?
