Lecture 3 homework
Name ___________________________
1. Provide 3 examples of possible functions of sensor signal conditioning.
2. List 3 advantages that electrical output sensors have over mechanical output sensors.
3. List the 3 primary forms for analog signal transmission.
4. Which analog signal transmission form is least susceptible to electrical noise and why?
5. You have a 4-20 mA output sensor that needs to be hooked up to the USB-6009 DAQ device.
Specifically how will that be done? Include a schematic will all required connections / components.
6. What would be the calibration equation for a 0-10 g vibration sensor that has 4-20 mA output being
read by voltage input DAQ device with the use of a 100 Ω resistor?
Following are excerpts from users manuals provided with various sensors. For each of the following
sensors (questions 7-11):
• Determine a calibration equation (i.e. y = mx + b)
• Specify which wires from the sensor will get attached to which terminals (provide the terminal
#) on the USB-6009
• If the USB-6009 is not able to provide power to the device, specify a potential power source
7.
Following are data sheets and technical data on a sensor used to measure air flow. You have
sensor model # FMA-904-V. Using a differential input, wire this sensor to channel 1 of the USB6009.
8. Following is a data sheet for a pressure sensor. You have sensor model # PX951-500S5V. Using
a differential input, connect this sensor to channel 2 of the USB-6009. Hint “EXC” means
“excitation”, in other words, input power for the sensor.
9. Following is a data sheet for an infrared temperature sensor. You have model # OS136-1-V2.
Wire the output of this device to channel 3 of the USB-6009, using differential input mode.
10. Following is portion of a user’s manual for a current measuring device. You will be measuring
the current output of a vehicle alternator, so you expect the current to be 50-100 A. Similar to
the thermocouple convertor used in lab 2, this device does not have any wire, just + and –
terminals. Specify how these terminals would be wired to the input of the USB-6009 channel 1.
