AU23703 – Vehicle Dynamics – Unit – IV – Assignment
Note: Answer the following questions in a separate observation notebook.
Use neat sketches wherever required.
1. Do the stability analysis of a vehicle resting (parked) on an upward slope.
2. Derive the expressions for the reactions at each wheel for a three wheeled vehicle
(Tadpole Design) at static conditions on level.
3. Choose any motorcycle and find its location of centre of gravity. (Hands–on
Activity).
4. Derive expression for maximum acceleration of a Rear-wheel drive car moving up
a slope. Also find the equation for coefficient of friction which will cause front wheel
lift off.
5. Derive the expression for Maximum tractive force (Power – limited) for a rear-wheel
drive vehicle, considering inertia losses of driveline components. Explain what is
mass factor.
6. Derive the expression for maximum tractive force (Traction – limited) for a front
wheel drive vehicle with solid axle suspension and non-locking differential and
deduce it for independent suspension. (Consider longitudinal weight transfer due
to acceleration and Transverse weight transfer due to drive torque).
7. Using the above expressions, find the traction limited acceleration of a front-wheel
drive vehicle for the following configurations.
a) it has solid axle suspension with non-locking differential
b) it has independent suspension
Mass:
Front : 885 kg, Rear : 522 kg.
C.G height = 0.48 m; wheelbase = 2.67 m; wheel track = 1.52 m;
Coefficient of Friction = 0.62; Final drive ratio = 3.7 ;
Tyre radius = 0.32 m; Roll Stiffness: Front: 1288 N.m /deg; Rear: 840 N.m /deg;
8. Explain the concept of ABS with neat sketches.
