DSM-5-TR (found on UHCL Library)
Scientific approach to psychopathology
Humanistic – less about diagnosis; holistic human being
How is the concept of psychopathology constructed? Where do we get our ideas?
Where does our consciousness of disorders/conditions come from?
Where do we get our information? Information vs. misinformation?
What is the role of lived experience? Are researchers separate from lived experience?
Social identity vs. diagnosis?
APA Dictionary of Psychology definition of psychopathology
Dual factor model (e.g., Suldo & Shaffer, 2008)
Biopsychosocial model
What is a psychological disorder? A pattern of behavioral, cognitive, emotional, or
physical symptoms shown by an individual with one or more of the following features:
(see DSM-5-TR, 2022)
Categorical classification systems
Potential disadvantages: somewhat arbitrary cutoffs (what if you have 4
depression symptoms but they are very severe and you are very
impaired?)
Shared definition is both true and not true
Dimensional classification systems
Instead of depression vs. anxiety, we have a spectrum of “internalizing
symptoms.”
o ASEBA (Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment)
o BASC (Behavioral Assessment System for Children)
Bottom-up approach derived from factor analysis (e.g., a bunch of mood and
anxiety symptoms tend to occur together)
Naming is not explaining
Labels cannot conveniently summarize, but often they are not actually
explanations (although many people treat them as such).
We might also think of them as not something that people “have” that then
“causes” their behavior – but rather as what people do that causes the
constellation of concerns that we assign a name.
Need to be able to describe behavioral concerns in context. This is much more
effective for getting to effective intervention. (This is typically a strength of school
psychology approach to assessment).
