DESIGN STATEMENT

characters and lighting of
The Beux Strategem through
a historical lens.
SCENE: THE INN
THIS IS ONE OF THE OPENING SCENES
AND INTRODUCES MULTIPLE
CHARACTERS SUCH AS
AIMWELL
ARCHER
BONIFACE
GIBBET
& CHERRY
LIGHTNING CONCEPT
WHATS MY IDEA?
1. THE SCENE TAKES PLACE IN A LATE-NIGHT ENGLISH INN, WHERE LIGHTING REFLECTS BOTH COMFORT
AND TENSION.
2.WARM AMBER LIGHT FROM CANDLES AND THE FIREPLACE CREATES A SENSE OF SAFETY AND
WELCOME.
3.COOL BLUE MOONLIGHT CONTRASTS THIS WARMTH, SUGGESTING SECRECY AND UNCERTAINTY.
4.THE LIGHTING DESIGN EMPHASIZES THE CONTRAST BETWEEN APPEARANCE AND HIDDEN
INTENTIONS.
WARM LIGHTNING -CANDLELIGHT/FIRE
What does warm light look like?
1. Warm amber tones create a cozy, inviting atmosphere
2. Low flickering light adds realism and intimacy
3. Suggests safety, comfort, and social interaction
COOL LIGHTNING- MOONLIGHT
what does cool light look like?
& NIGHT
Cool blue tones establish nighttime setting
Creates contrast with warm interior lighting
Adds mystery and tension
LIGHT DIRECTION & SHADOW
HOW DOES LIGHT BEHAVE?
CANDLELIGHT COMES FROM LOW ANGLES, CREATING UPWARD SHADOWS
MOONLIGHT ENTERS FROM THE SIDE (WINDOWS)
SHADOWS STRETCH ACROSS THE STAGE AND SHIFT WITH MOVEMENT
THESE SHADOWS ENHANCE TENSION AND HIGHLIGHT SECRECY
LIGHTNING RENDERING
The final lighting combines warm candlelight and cool moonlight to create contrast, depth, and tension within the space.
THE COSTUME OVERVIEW
The character we have chosen for our project
is Cherry
Cherry is the Inn
Keeper Boniface’s
daugther
She plays a small but
important role in the
story as a social
observer in the Inn
scene.
Her costume will be
designed to fit the
mold of someone
who has a higher
social standard than
a peasant but is still
yet to reach
upperclass
COLOR PALETTE
Cherry’s Color Scheme
The color scheme for Cherry’s costume
will include Primarily Green colors to
reflect her liveliness and energy.
Light Blue’s to represent her youthful
demeanor, juxtaposed to the men of the
scene.
Beige and Yellow to reflect her middle
class status.
COSTUME TEXTURES
th
Cherry is a middle-class woman from the 18 century.
As such, her costume will include durable wool materials
The materials will be a bit worn so that her clothes will
have the feel of being lived in, but not necessarily dingy
The clothing should feel flexible in order to keep up with the busy
demands of working an inn but also modest enough to suppurt a
young women of this era.
ACCESORIES
In terms of accesories the character Cherry will
have:
A slightly worn apron, not too tightly tied to
serve the character functionally with her job in
the inn but also to reflect her youthful nature
Ribbons for her hair to show her playful and
expressive attitude, and also her femininity
A bundle of keys to further solidify her duties
with inn keeping
ACCESSORY RENDERINGS
Overall
Aprons
Keys
Ribbons
LIGHTING COMPLEMENTS
How does the lighting complement Cherry’s costume?
Warm Candlelight: This lighting will accentuate Cherry’s earth tones and heighten the welcoming
environment of the inn
Cool Moonlight: The cool moonlight emphasizes shadows and suggests an element of secrecy, which
calls attention to the character's hidden, observant nature
Dual Lighting: The dual lighting elements balance both warm and cool moods, which symbolize the
character's dual nature as a playful, feminine presence in the inn and also a subtle moral observer who
sees through the deceit of other characters
