We are delighted that you have joined our community and look forward to watching you thrive in this next chapter of your lives. As you enter College, you join an institution that has supported talented students during their time at university for over 150 years. We hope that, as so many of your predecessors have done, you too will find a home-away-fromhome here and that you and your peers will make your own distinctive contribution to the proud history of the College. Students here benefit from a powerful sense of community enabled in large part by the Students’ Club with each and every member playing their part in College life. Here, you will find many fellow students who will share your interests and even more who will cheer you on as you pursue them. Academic success is our shared goal. With around 150 tutorials running weekly as well as workshops and short courses, the College will help you achieve your academic ambitions and extend yourselves personally and professionally. Our professional development evenings and networking opportunities give you an extra layer of preparation for your career after you leave College. There are also many opportunities to participate in sports, music, drama, debating, creative arts and community service. Do make the most of these opportunities and the new friendships they will bring. St Andrew’s is a dynamic, vibrant community. We have a strong commitment to student leadership and responsibility, so you can anticipate freedom and growth, along with high expectations behaviourally and academically. You'll leave with academic achievements, professional connections, lifelong friends, social and emotional intelligence, and leadership skills that will serve you well in your future lives. I am thrilled to welcome you, and I look forward to seeing you flourish during your time at St Andrew's. Warmest regards, Dr Daniel Tyler Principal, St Andrew's College St Andrew’s College Arrival & Welcome Week Guide 2 Welcome Letters From your Senior Student Dear Freshers, I would like to congratulate you on being accepted into St. Andrew’s College for Semester two of 2026. The House Committee and I are enthusiastic about the year ahead, with a commitment to maintain the vibrancy and traditions that define our wonderful college. We, the students, are proud to be in the position of controlling our own affairs. The Students’ Club, a self-governed student body of the College, is an incorporated entity and is responsible for the organisation and financing of competitions, social events and cultural activities. The Students’ Club is financed by the annual subscription of all members and a letter from our Honorary Treasurer, Sam Singleton, will provide further details. I welcome you to be an actively involved member in our community. Upon entering St. Andrew’s, you will soon realise that you are part of the college and not merely a resident. The effort you put into college will be very rewarding and I hope you will take advantage of this. During the semester where possible I encourage you to keep your Wednesday evenings free as we have our Students Club Meetings and Formal Dinners, which is an opportunity for the whole college to come together. The tremendous college spirit in St Andrew’s is quite unique and it’s this that sets us apart from the other colleges on campus. The Rawson (male sport), Rosebowl (female sport), and Palladian (performing arts) competitions start early in the semester. We are renowned for and intend to continue our position of being fierce and respectful competitors in these competitions. Participation in these competitions is strongly encouraged regardless of your level of ability. Early preparation is essential if we wish to excell in these competitions. We pride ourselves on being well prepared. Our college enjoys a strong history of winning, and it is ours to keep the torch unquenched. I’m conscious of the fact that being away from home can present its challenges. So please know that should you have any concerns this year, no matter their nature or magnitude, your Mentors, Pastoral Care Leaders and staff, are at your side. The leadership team is committed to ensuring that each of you feel at home within these walls, so know that my door is always open for a chat. I hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays, and I look forward to meeting you. Should you have any questions prior to this, please do not hesitate to contact me. Language Courses & Short Courses Short Courses are designed to equip students with cross-disciplinary soft skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and leadership that help them stand out and excel in the workplace. In Semester 2 we will be offering the following short courses at College: • • • • Leadership in Practice - is a six-week intensive designed to build leadership capability through hands on, live simulations and real-time decision making. Across the program, students engage with fast paced scenarios spanning personal leadership choices, crisis decision making, team communication, influence through networks, strategy under uncertainty, and negotiation. The course uses interactive simulation cases from Harvard Business School, with each session focused on practical behaviours that support effective leadership when stakes are high. Negotiations - is a five-week course designed to develop practical skills for navigating real world business scenarios, from closing deals to resolving conflict. Drawing on cases from the Northwestern Kellogg Dispute Resolution Research Center, each session blends focused theory with dynamic role play exercises that allow students to practice strategies such as making the first offer, creating mutually beneficial outcomes, and managing difficult conversations. The course is suited to students from all majors who are looking to build confidence, influence, and career-read communication skills. Advanced Negotiations - s a simulation driven course for students seeking to move beyond the foundation Negotiations course and negotiate effectively in high stakes, complex situations. Over six weeks, students engage with public disputes, strategic deal making, agent led contracts, and multiparty negotiations where coalitions form, interests collide, and outcomes depend on process as much as persuasion. The cases are more complex and extended, involving imperfect information, difficult trade-offs, and situations that may not offer a single ideal outcome. Complex Problem Solving - Complex problem solving has been described as the core skill for twenty-first century teams and is highly valued in the workplace. This course will introduce students to the concept of structured problem solving and demonstrate the application, across a range of practical case studies, of the Seven Steps framework: I. Define the Problem, II. Disaggregate, III. Prioritize, IV. Workplan, V. Analyse, VI. Synthesize, VII. Communicate. If you wish to register for any of these short courses, you can do this here. For more information, please refer to our webpage via this link: https://www.standrewscollege.edu.au/educationstudent-life-programs/short-courses/ Language courses are also offered at Drew’s, such as French, German, Spanish, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese and AUSLAN. If you wish to study a language at Drew’s, you can register your interest here. Academic Release Form You should have received via email from Jip a new DocuSign form regarding an academic results release form. This form is required to authorise the University (Sydney University, UTS, UNSW, University of Notre Dame, ACU, etc.) to release your academic results each semester to the college. This is a requirement of you being a member of College. Please make sure to complete this form prior to arrival at the college. For most, moving to college marks the first real sense of adult freedom, and with that comes not just excitement and fun, but also an increased level of responsibility and accountability. Adapting to university life and living in a robust collegiate community does not always come naturally to all, and many students undergo a period of adjustment and learning. The College staff and students have put together a program that will help you adapt to these changes. There is a blend of orientation activities, information/education sessions, and of course lots of social bonding to make life-long friendships. Fresh Fresh Buddies All Fresh Fresh are assigned to a Buddy who is a current First Year student (Fresher) at College. Each of these Freshers have applied to become a Buddy and have been especially selected by the Fresher reps (First Year Representatives) to welcome you to Drew’s, help you find your way around College and to ensure that you feel included during your first days and weeks at College. These Buddies understand that joining a College mid-way through the year is daunting, which is why they volunteered to take on this important role.
