STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Application for the Position of Deputy Director
Chanakya University, Bengaluru, India
“The purpose of education is not to fill a bucket, but to light a fire — and the purpose
of leadership is to ensure the fire never dies.”
It is with deep conviction, purposeful intent, and a profound respect for Chanakya University’s
mission that I submit this Statement of Purpose in pursuit of the Deputy Director position. Chanakya
University is not merely an institution of higher learning; it is an audacious civilisational project —
one that aspires to revive India’s intellectual heritage while rigorously engaging with the demands of
a rapidly evolving global knowledge economy. That vision resonates with the very core of what I
believe education leadership must represent today.
I. WHO I AM: A PHILOSOPHY OF PURPOSE
My journey into education has never been simply a career choice; it has been a calling shaped by
the belief that institutions have the power to transform not just individuals, but communities and
civilisations. From the earliest stages of my professional life, I have been drawn to work that sits at
the intersection of vision, execution, and people. I have sought roles not for their titles, but for the
latitude they provide to build, reform, and inspire.
I am someone who leads from conviction. My approach to institutional leadership is grounded
in three core principles: clarity of purpose, collaborative accountability, and the courage
to challenge comfortable mediocrity. These are not abstract ideals — they are disciplines I have
cultivated through sustained reflection and practice.
I approach institutions the way a master craftsman approaches a great work: with patience,
precision, and an unrelenting desire to make it worthy of the generations it will serve. To me, a
university is the most consequential institution a society can build — and the Deputy Director’s role
is among the most consequential within it.
II. WHY CHANAKYA UNIVERSITY: A DELIBERATE CHOICE
In a landscape crowded with universities that have grown comfortable replicating western
academic templates, Chanakya University stands as a deliberate and courageous exception. Its
founding vision — to integrate India’s classical knowledge systems with rigorous contemporary
scholarship — is not only intellectually bold, it is historically necessary.
Chanakya University’s commitment to the Nalanda model of residential, holistic, and
interdisciplinary education represents what I believe is the most important educational
experiment happening in India today. It is not looking to simply produce employable
graduates; it is endeavoring to cultivate civilisationally rooted, globally competent
human beings.
This alignment with my own convictions about what education can and must be is the primary
reason I have chosen to apply here, specifically, and for no lesser reason. Chanakya University does
not need administrators who merely manage systems — it needs leaders who are co-creators of its
vision. I offer myself in precisely that spirit.
III. MY THOUGHTS: ON EDUCATION, LEADERSHIP, AND
INSTITUTION-BUILDING
I believe that the deepest function of a university is not to transfer information, but to cultivate
judgment — the capacity to discern, synthesise, and act wisely under conditions of complexity and
uncertainty. This conviction shapes every aspect of how I think about institutional leadership.
On academic governance, I hold that excellence is never an accident of policy — it is the product
of culture. Policies set floors; culture determines ceilings. A Deputy Director who understands this
knows that the most important work happens not in boardrooms but in corridors, in faculty meetings,
in the informal spaces where institutional character is actually forged.
On student development, I am persuaded that the best universities do not shape students into preexisting moulds. They create conditions in which students discover the shape of their own
highest selves. This requires mentorship, intellectual challenge, and a refusal to confuse credential
acquisition with genuine formation.
On India’s role in global education, I believe we are at an inflection point. The next two decades
will determine whether India reclaims its status as a global centre of knowledge production or
remains a consumer of intellectual frameworks largely generated elsewhere. Chanakya University has
positioned itself squarely at the centre of that question — and that makes every position within it a
position of historic consequence.
IV. MY ACTIONS: A RECORD OF PURPOSEFUL CONTRIBUTION
Throughout my professional journey, I have consistently worked to translate vision into
institutional reality. My experience spans academic administration, program development,
stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning — all of which are critical competencies for the
Deputy Director role at Chanakya University.
Strategic Program Development: I have been instrumental in designing and operationalising
academic programs that balance intellectual rigour with practical relevance, ensuring that curriculum
development is driven by both scholarly integrity and real-world applicability.
Stakeholder Alignment: My experience includes navigating complex institutional ecosystems —
coordinating across academic departments, administrative functions, regulatory bodies, and external
partners — to build coherent, aligned systems that advance institutional goals.
Culture Building: I have consistently invested in creating environments where high performance
and human dignity coexist, understanding that the most productive institutions are those where
people feel both challenged and valued.
Quality and Compliance: I bring a disciplined orientation toward institutional quality assurance,
understanding that accreditation and compliance are not bureaucratic obstacles but opportunities to
codify and strengthen standards of excellence.
V. MY UNIQUE PROPOSITIONS: WHAT I BRING THAT IS DISTINCTIVE
Beyond functional competence, I bring several qualities that I believe are particularly well-suited to
Chanakya University’s singular context and ambitions:
A Civilisational Perspective on Education: I do not approach education as a service industry or
a credentialing mechanism. I approach it as a civilisational practice. This disposition means I am
naturally aligned with Chanakya University’s deeper philosophical commitments and will advocate
for them not performatively but substantively.
Bridging the Classical and the Contemporary: I have a genuine intellectual engagement with
India’s classical traditions of knowledge — from Arthashastra and Nalanda to the epistemological
frameworks of Nyaya and Vedanta — and I can engage authentically with the university’s vision of
integrating this heritage with 21st-century scholarship.
Institutional Empathy: I understand that a young, ambitious institution like Chanakya University
faces a particular set of challenges: the pressure to establish credibility quickly while preserving the
long-term integrity of its vision. I bring the patience and strategic temperament required to navigate
that tension wisely.
Leadership as Service: I hold firmly to the conviction that institutional leadership is
fundamentally an act of stewardship. A Deputy Director who grasps this will make decisions oriented
not by personal advancement but by the long-term flourishing of the institution and those it serves.
VI. MY COMMITMENT: ENDEAVORING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
I am not applying to Chanakya University to occupy a position. I am applying to make a genuine,
lasting, and measurable contribution to one of the most important educational endeavours of our
time.
In the Deputy Director role, I intend to focus on three priority areas from my first day:
strengthening the scaffolding between the university’s foundational vision and its operational
realities; building institutional systems that are resilient, transparent, and conducive to scholarly
excellence; and nurturing a culture in which every member of the Chanakya community — faculty,
staff, and student alike — feels the weight and privilege of their participation in something larger than
themselves.
I believe deeply in Chanakya University’s potential to become not just a great Indian
university, but a great world university. I want to be a part of that journey with full
commitment, full accountability, and the kind of servant-leadership that the vision demands and
deserves.
In the spirit of Chanakya’s enduring counsel:
“Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions — Why am I
doing it, what the results might be, and will I be successful. Only when you think
deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, go ahead.”
I have asked these questions. My answers are clear. I am ready.
Submitted with purpose and commitment,
