Elements of Setting Description Bring your writing to life with these six powerful tools A vivid setting helps your reader feel transported into your story. Use all five senses — and think carefully about atmosphere and mood — to make every scene unforgettable. ELEMENT 01 ELEMENT 02 ELEMENT 03 Sight Sound Smell & Taste What does it look like? What can you hear? What fills the air? Describe colours, shapes, light, shadow, movement and scale. Paint a picture using precise, vivid vocabulary. Use onomatopoeia and precise verbs to recreate sounds. Silence can be just as powerful! Often-forgotten senses that add authenticity. Link smells to memories or emotions for depth. crackled rumbled pungent towering shimmering murmured echoed gleaming vast murky jagged hushed shrieked earthy acrid sweet stale crisp EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE The ancient oak towered above its twisted branches clawing at the pale winter sky. The only sound was the soft crunch of frozen leaves beneath her boots and the distant hoot of an owl. The air was thick with the sweet, earthy scent of rain on dry earth, mingled with wild garlic. ELEMENT 04 ELEMENT 05 ELEMENT 06 Touch & Texture Weather & Time Mood & Atmosphere When and what is the weather? How does it feel? How does it feel emotionally? Include physical sensations — temperature, texture, pain, comfort. Make readers feel truly present. Weather and time of day shape the feel of a scene. Pathetic fallacy links weather to feelings. Choose every detail deliberately. Word choices, sentence length and pace shape the reader's emotions. rough biting cold dusk scorching eerie searing jagged dawn sinister slick velvety storm-lashed fog-wrapped twilight tranquil oppressive joyful lonely EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE The icy wind whipped her face; the rough bark bit into her palms as she steadied herself. By twilight, storm clouds gathered overhead, mirroring the dread that had settled in his chest. An eerie stillness hung over the village. Not a soul stirred. Even the birds had fallen silent.
