Introduction to Artificial Intelligence 1 Introduction The field of artificial intelligence, or AI, is concerned with not just understanding but also building intelligent entities—machines that can compute how to act effectively and safely in a wide variety of novel situations. AI attempts to replicate human intelligence using hardware and software solutions. Companies known to utilize AI in their fields include Google with Google Translate, Apple with Face ID, Amazon with its Alexa products, and even Uber and Tesla, who are still working on building self-driving cars. The field of machine learning is concerned with the question of how to construct computer programs that automatically improve with experience. 2 Introduction The field of machine learning focuses on building computer programs capable of learning patterns from data and improving their learning ability as more data becomes available. Machine Learning can be defined as "a field of study that gives computers the capability to learn without being explicitly programmed." A more formal definition states: A computer program is said to learn from experience, E, with respect to a task, T, and a performance measure,P, if its performance on T, as measured by P, improves with experience, E. 3 Introduction In order for a computer program to be learning, it requires: Experience (E): This refers to the data that needs to be fed to the machine. Task (T): The type of decision or problem that the machine needs to perform. Performance measure (P): The measure of how well the machine is performing the given task. 4 Introduction: Example: Imagine we have a computer program that learns to classify emails as either "spam" or "not spam" based on their content. Let's apply the machine learning definition to this example: Experience (E): The experience, in this case, refers to a dataset of labeled emails. Each email in the dataset is associated with a label indicating whether it is "spam" or "not spam." This labeled dataset serves as the experience that the computer program uses to learn patterns. Task (T): The task for the machine learning program is to correctly classify incoming emails as "spam" or "not spam" based on the patterns it learns from the labeled dataset. The program needs to make decisions on whether an email is spam or not. 5 Introduction: Example: Performance measure (P): The performance measure in this example can be the accuracy of the program in correctly classifying emails. It measures how well the program performs the task of classifying emails. The higher the accuracy, the better the program's performance. 6 Introduction How is it different from traditional programming?
