OPERATING SYSTEM
Each modern device requires an operating system,
wether it’s a desktop, laptop, computer, smartphone, or a
video game system.
It serves as the main interface between the user and the
computer, allowing users to operate the device, run
applications, manage files, and use hardware
components such; keyboard, mouse, and printer
efficiently.
Is a software that acts as an interface between the user
and the hardware of the computer.
To perform other programs, every computer must have
at least one (OS).
Application such as Chrome, Games, MS Word, etc.
requires an environment where it runs and does its task.
Computer Operating System is the main computer
program that is placed between the software and the
hardware that distributes space and computing assets
into applications, manages files and enforces rules on
security.
Without an Operating System, the user cannot use a
computer or any mobile devices.
2 FUNCTIONS OF
OPERATING SYSTEM
1.Real-time Operating System- that responds to input
immediately with very little or no delay. It is used in
systems where exact timing is very important, such as
medical machines and traffic lights.
2.Normal Operating System- used for everyday
computer tasks. It allows users to run programs, manage
files, and use the internet. Normal operating systems
focus on user convenience.
4 TYPES OF
OPERATING SYSTEM
1.Apple iOS- used in Apple mobile devices such as the
iPhone and iPad. It allows users to make calls, send
messages, use apps, and browse the internet.
2.Microsoft Windows- a popular operating system used
on personal computers and laptops. It allows users to run
programs, manage files, and connect to the internet.
3.Apple mac- the operating system used on Mac
computers. It helps users manage files, run applications,
and use hardware like the keyboard and mouse.
4.Linux- is an open-source operating system, which
means it can be modified and shared by users. It is used
on computers, servers, and even some smartphones.
5 CLASSIFICATIONS OF
OPERATING SYSTEM
1.Multi-user- Each user can run programs without
affecting others. This type of OS is usually used in
schools, offices, and servers.
2.Multi-processing- Uses more than one CPU or
processor to do tasks faster. The work is shared between
processors to improve performance.
3.Multi-tasking- allows the computer to run many
programs at the same time. For example; you can browse
the internet, listen to music, and type a document at
once.
4.Multi-threading- Allows different parts of one
program to run at the same time. This helps programs
run faster and smoother. For example, a game can load
graphics while playing sound.
5.Real-time Operating System- Gives an instant
response to input with no delay.
