Year 7 REVISION GUIDE Creating the right revision environment... • • • • • • • • Find a quiet place to study – this should be away from younger siblings, pets and other distractions at home. Turn off the TV and your music, put your phone in another room so you are not tempted to pick it up every time you get a message or social media alert! Find a flat surface you can work on (this could be a desk or the kitchen table), find a chair to sit in that supports your back. Have the following items to hand: this KS3 revision guide, Organisers, subject revision guides linked in the subject pages here (or other subject-specific materials), exercise books for the subject, pencil case, lined paper and a drink. Go to the toilet before you start. Create a timetable for your revision weeks, deciding at which time you are going to do your blocks of revision, and stick to it. Take a photo of your timetable and send to your parent/carer so they can help you stay on track. Plan 30 minutes of revision at a time and make sure you have at least a 10-minute break before doing another one. Aim for 90 minutes per day in the week before the exams, with perhaps a little more at the weekends. Be disciplined with yourself – it can be hard not to get distracted sometimes but just remember how great it will feel when you prove what you are capable of. Focus on adjective, noun etc. Analysis – Why does the writer use that technique and that word? Effect on the reader. Summary of Private Peaceful Tommo, Charlie, and Big Joe Peaceful are three brothers living in the English countryside. Tommo, the youngest, is kind and sensitive; Charlie, the middle brother, is brave and protective; and Big Joe, the eldest, has a learning disability but is full of joy and love for animals. When they’re young, life is both beautiful and hard. They spend their days exploring nature with their best friend Molly. But their father dies in a tree-felling accident while saving Tommo, leaving the family heartbroken and struggling with guilt, poverty, and the cruel control of the local landowner, the Colonel. Molly and Charlie fall in love and have a baby, causing trouble with Molly’s strict parents. The Colonel threatens the family’s home and makes life miserable. War breaks out, offering the brothers a chance to escape their struggles. Tommo and Charlie experience the horrors of trench warfare: mud, rats, bombs, and fear. Charlie constantly looks after Tommo, even defying unfair orders to keep him safe. Charlie is arrested and tragically executed by his own army for refusing to abandon Tommo when he’s injured. The novel is framed by Tommo’s memories on the night before Charlie’s execution, as he tries to hold on to every precious moment they shared. Cars roared through crowded streets while towering skyscrapers reflected flashes of colour onto the wet pavement below. Steam rose from drains like smoke from a dragon’s mouth, and the air smelled of petrol, rain, and hot food from nearby stalls. Everywhere, people rushed past without slowing down, their footsteps creating a never-ending rhythm. The city never truly slept. Paragraph 2 – Zoom in on one symbolic detail On the edge of the pavement lay a cracked wristwatch, ticking faintly despite the broken glass. Tiny droplets of rain collected on its face, blurring the numbers beneath. The second hand moved unevenly, stuttering like a nervous heartbeat. It symbolised time slipping away — a warning that somewhere in the giant city, something important was about to happen. Paragraph 3 – Change perspective From the roof of a tall building, a security guard scanned the streets below. The city looked completely different from above. Streams of headlights flowed like glowing rivers between the buildings, and distant sirens wailed through the night air. The guard noticed things others ignored: shadowy alleyways, flickering signs, and figures moving quickly through the crowds. Up high, the city felt less exciting and more dangerous. Paragraph 4 – Zoom in on a contrasting detail In the middle of the busy street sat a tiny food cart glowing warmly beneath fairy lights. The smell of sweet roasted chestnuts drifted through the cold air, comforting and rich. An old man hummed softly as he served customers with a tired smile. While the city rushed wildly around him, the little cart felt calm and welcoming, like a small island of peace in the chaos. Paragraph 5 – Circle back and create an emotional ending Rain continued to pour onto the shining streets as crowds hurried beneath flickering neon signs. Somewhere on the pavement, the cracked watch kept ticking weakly, almost drowned out by the endless noise of the city. The skyscrapers still towered overhead, cold and watchful, while the restless city carried on through the night without ever looking back.
