Instructions for a Motorcycle Oil Change
Replacing engine oil and the filter is a crucial procedure aimed at protecting engine
components from corrosion and ensuring smooth operation.
These guidelines include instructions about draining the old engine oil, installing a new oil
filter, and filling up the engine again. These instructions do not include steps to repair engine or
transmission problems of any kind. The procedure is aimed at motorcycle owners with some level
of technical skills and simple hand tools. This procedure should only be done on a flat concrete
surface in order to drain the oil properly.
Equipment Needed
To begin the oil change, the tools needed are a socket wrench, a torque wrench, an oil
filter wrench, a drain pan, a clean funnel, a rear motorcycle stand, fresh motorcycle oil according
to specifications, a new oil filter, and a replacement crush washer.
Safety Guidelines and Notices
Before starting, please read through these critical safety precautions to prevent severe
injury or equipment damage:
Warning
Engine oil can reach temperatures exceeding 100°C during operation. To avoid severe skin
burns, ensure the engine is warm to the touch but not hot before draining the oil. Always wear
protective nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Caution
Over-tightening the drain bolt can strip the aluminum threads of the engine crankcase,
leading to costly repairs. Always use a calibrated torque wrench set to your manufacturer's
specific torque ratings.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Draining Oil
First, warm up the engine by turning it on and running it for five minutes. This lowers the
oil's viscosity in order to make it flow better and carry away more contaminants. Shut off the
engine and ensure the bike is securely balanced upright using the rear stand. Locate the oil drain
bolt, oil filter, and oil fill cap using your vehicle manual. Remove the oil fill cap to prevent a
vacuum from forming, which allows the fluid to drain smoothly and completely. Next, place the
oil drain pan directly under the drain bolt. Unscrew the drain bolt, applying slight inward pressure
on the bolt so it does not drop into the drain pan and let the oil completely drain out.

Changing Oil Filter
Wait until the oil finishes draining, then replace the crush washer with a new one to
guarantee a leak-proof seal, when done then screw the draining bolt back to the manufacturer’s
specifications using the torque wrench. Move the drain pan under the oil filter. Unscrew the oil
filter using a filter wrench and let the remaing oil drip out completely. Lubricate the rubber O-ring
of the new filter you want to install with a drop of fresh engine oil to prevent it from binding or
tearing during the installation. After that, screw the oil filter hand-tight. Do not use tools for this
step, since over-tightening can crush the seal
Replacing Oil
To fill the motorcycle engine back up, a clean funnel should be placed into the fill port,
and the oil should be added in accordance with your manual's precise specifications. The oil fill
port cover should be reapplied tightly. The bike should be allowed to run idle for five minutes in
order for the new oil to pass through the engine blocks and fill the new and dry filter. Once the
bike is shut off, allow it to stay motionless for three minutes. Verify the oil level by making use of
either the sight glass or the dipstick present inside the bike. This level should be right in between
the two indicator markings.
