The speed of light waves
• All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed
in a vacuum, the speed of light 3×108 m/sec.
• As with other waves, the speed of light is the
frequency multiplied by the wavelength
4
• The index of refraction (n) for a material is the ratio of
the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in
that material

Exercise
1. Calculate the wavelength of violet light that has a
frequency of 7.5 × 1014 Hz.
2. Light travels at 1.56×108 m/sec through zircon.
What is the index of refraction of zircon?
