Infectious Diseases
In today’s highly connected world, highly infectious diseases such as Measles, Poliomyelitis (Polio), Covid,
etc… can spread faster and further than ever before. Global travel, trade, and population movement mean
that an outbreak in one region can quickly become a global concern.
In this assessment, you will explore and discuss how science plays a crucial role in controlling and/or
eliminating Polio disease.
Task
Your task is to write an 800–1000-word scientific essay.
You will describe how Poliomyelitis affects human health and populations. You will explain how scientific
methods are used to identify and study this disease. You will also evaluate at least two strategies used to
treat, control, or prevent it, and conclude whether these strategies are effective and appropriate.
1. The Role of Science in understanding and solving the Problem.
Understanding the problem (Briefly)
• What type of pathogen causes Polio?
• How is Science used to identify Polio in patients and how do scientists track and monitor polio
outbreaks around the world? (Support your ideas with examples or evidence)
Solving the problem:
• Discuss the scientific strategies used to solve this problem, and how effective have these
strategies been worldwide and in Egypt.
2. Analysis of the implications of using science to solve the problem
You should Describe:
- at least two scientific or medical strategies used to treat, control, or prevent it.
- both positive and negative implications
- the implications of your solution(s) when interacting with one factor of your choice:
Choose ONE factor:
• Social
• Economic
• Political
• Environmental
• Ethical
