Hector Zeroni (Zero)
Hector “Zero” Zeroni is a boy that Stanley meets at
Camp Green Lake. Zero is introduced as a shy boy who
rarely speaks, although he later reveals to Stanley that
he just doesn’t like answering the other ‘campers’
questions. He cannot read or write at the beginning of
the novel, although throughout the course of the book
he learns to read under Stanley’s tuition. It is revealed
in the novel that Zero is the reason that Stanley got sent
to Camp Green Lake as he was the one who stole Clive
Livingston’s trainers from the Homeless Shelter.
In the second part of Holes, Zero runs away from Camp Green Lake after he tried to strangle
one of the other campers. Stanley finds Zero hiding in the desert, under Sam the Onion
Farmers Boat the ‘Mary Lou’. Zero had been surviving off of Kissin’ Kate Barlow’s peaches
(which he named Sploosh) the entirety of his time in the desert. He became ill after sharing a
jar of Sploosh with Stanley and was unable to walk, which resulted in Stanley carrying Zero
up the mountain, thus breaking the Curse Madame Zeroni placed upon Stanleys family.
Stanley Yelnats (Caveman) – Stanley “The Caveman” Yelnats is the main character of the
novel Holes. He is sent to Camp Green Lake after being wrongly accused and found guilty of
stealing a famous athletes shoes. Stanley is introduced as an unlucky kid who
