: After the first world war ended everyone wanted to avoid repeating the same mass slaughter
of the war that had just ended. They also agreed that a league of nations ( A global parliament)
that could solve international problems without resorting to war- that would help achieve this.
The league had strong aims such as :
1. To discourage aggression from any nation
2. To encourage countries to co-operate especially in business and trade
3. To encourage nations to disarm
4. To improve the living and working conditions of people in all parts of the world .
The league did have some success and fulfilled some aims such as:
1. Peaceful Settlement
of Disputes
For eg: The Aaland island dispute was solved by the league of nations between 2 countries
(Sweden and Finland),Greece-Bulgaria conflict
2.Humanitarian Work
For eg: Helped refugees, improved health, and fought slavery and drug trade
3. Economic and Social Work
For eg: Improved working conditions
Controlled diseases
Helped smaller countries
Failures of the league:
The failure of the league in the 1930s were not only because of aggressor nations undermining
its authority, but also due to its own members. Britain and France, the 2 most influential
members, ignored the league.
The main reasons of the failure :
1.Not all countries joined the league
2. The league had no power
3. The league had no army
4. Unable to act quickly
In short the failures happened because of weak structures (French and British self interest). The
league had no army of their own so it was much harder to settle disputes.Reaching to make
decisions too slowly. Ineffective sanctions either weren't used or didn't work.Economic
depression and league’s selfish interests led to rise of dictators.Major powers absent( USA not
in the League).
