ECON 350 Assignment- Week 1
Solution 1:
In case of 2 die, the total number of outcomes= 6*6 (since each dice has 6 faces)
Total number of combinations of the 2 die that result in a sum 8 are:
1. (2,6)
2. (3,5)
3. (4,4)
4. (5,3)
5. (6,2)
Hence, there are 5 combinations which sum up to 8.
Probability: P(sum=8) = number of favorable outcomes/ total number of outcomes
= 5/36
Answer: the probability is 5/36.
Solution 2:
Given:
Total people polled: 1000
Yes to 1st question (registered Whig) = 625
No to 1st question = 375
Yes to 2nd question (approve Fillmore) = 400
No to 2nd question = 600
Yes to both questions = 300
Part a: yes to at least one question = yes to Q1 OR Q2
P(yes to at least one question)= P (yes to 1 st question) + P (yes to 2nd question) – P (yes to
both questions)
= 625/1000 + 400/ 1000 – 300/1000 = 725/1000 = 0.725
Hence, the probability of yes to at least 1 question = 0.725
Part b: P (yes to 1st if they answered yes to 2nd) = P(yes to Q1 | Yes to Q2)
= P(yes to both)/ P (yes to Q2)
= 300/400
= .75
Hence, the probability is .75.
