My Life as History
What is this task about?
History is not just famous people or big events.
Your own experiences can be history too.
In this task, you will look at one personal event or memory from your life and think about why it
might matter in the future.
In your book, complete the following steps:
Step 1 – Choose ONE personal event or memory
Some ideas could include (you don’t need to use these if you have your own idea already!):
When you started school
A favourite childhood memory
A sport or school event
When you met your best friend for the first time
When a natural disaster happened in your town
Step 2 – Describe what happened
You can use dot points, sentences or even draw your answers to the questions below:
What happened?
When did it happen?
Where did it happen?
Who was involved?
Step 3 – Think like a historian
How is this event or memory remembered? (Is it talked about a lot? Rarely? Positively?
Negatively?)
Whose perspective (point of view) might be missing? Who might have
experienced this event or memory differently?
Why might this memory or event matter in 50 years? Who might it matter
to?
Challenge:
Do you think personal memory is a reliable source for history?
Why?
