We started with a variable change ๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ก = ๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ก − ๐๐
And suggested a superposition solution as: ๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ก = ๐๐ป ๐ฅ, ๐ก + ๐ ๐ฅ + ๐ ๐ก
We reached the following solution:

Multidimensional transient problems: Product solution
Multidimensional transient problems in rectangular coordinates (Cartesian) can be
expressed in terms of the product of two one-dimensional solutions.
โช Limitations: the initial condition must be expressed as the product of two/three
functions as, ๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ฆ, ๐ง, 0 = ๐น ๐ฅ, ๐ฆ, ๐ง = ๐น1 ๐ฅ ๐น2 ๐ฆ ๐น3 ๐ง . Clearly, the uniform
temperature initial condition satisfies this condition
โช All boundary conditions must be homogeneous.
Let us consider a simple rectangular system defined as 0 ≤ ๐ฅ ≤ ๐ฟ and 0 ≤ ๐ฆ ≤ ๐, where
For 0 ≤ ๐ฅ ≤ ๐ฟ

Multidimensional transient problems: Product solution, cont’d
Then, the solution of the original problem is:
๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ฆ, ๐ก = ๐1 ๐ฅ, ๐ก ๐2 ๐ฆ, ๐ก
Which can be easily demonstrated by substituting the product solution into the original
governing equation,
๐ 2 ๐1
๐ 2 ๐2 1

๐๐ฅ 2 ๐ผ ๐๐ก
๐๐ฆ 2 ๐ผ ๐๐ก
Since the boundary conditions are homogeneous, it is easily verifiable that the product
solution also satisfies them.
Multidimensional transient problems: Product solution, cont’d
Product solution example: Solve the following problem using the product solution approach.
Note that not all boundary conditions are homogeneous and that the initial condition is a
uniform temperature value, T0 > T∞.

๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ฆ, 0 = ๐0
In 0 ≤ ๐ฅ ≤ ๐ฟ and 0 ≤ ๐ฆ ≤ ๐
โ, ๐∞
๐ ๐ฅ, ๐ฆ, ๐ก
Now, the problem can be turned into a
homogeneous one by defining ๐ = ๐ − ๐∞
