Part 1: Writing in Different Styles
Instructions: Below are four different styles of writing. Your task is to write
a paragraph about hurricanes in each of the styles listed. Each
paragraph should be at least 5-6 sentences long and reflect the specific
tone and structure of the style.
1. Narrative Opening

Style: Storytelling.
o
Task: Write a narrative about someone experiencing a
hurricane. Describe the events and emotions of the character(s)
involved. Make the reader feel like they are part of the action.

Example: "The wind howled as Sarah huddled in her house,
praying the roof would hold up..."
2. News Bulletin
o
Style: Factual, journalistic.
o
Task: Write a news report about a hurricane. Include facts
such as the location, impact, damage, and any emergency
responses. Use an objective, formal tone.
o
Example: "A category 4 hurricane has struck the eastern coast,
leaving thousands without power..."
3. Science Article
o
Style: Informative, educational.
o
Task: Write a science article explaining how hurricanes form,
their effects, and their impact on the environment. Use clear
and formal language to educate the reader.

Example: "Hurricanes are powerful storms that form over warm
ocean waters. They are driven by heat and moisture..."
4. Charity Appeal
o
Style: Persuasive, emotional.
o
Task: Write a charity appeal asking for donations to help
hurricane victims. Use persuasive and emotional language to
encourage readers to act.
o
Example: "The devastation caused by the recent hurricane is
heartbreaking. Thousands are without food, water, or shelter.
Your donation can make a difference..."
Part 2: Change Active Voice to Passive Voice
Instructions: Read the paragraph below. Your task is to rewrite it in
passive voice. Once you've rewritten it, explain how the meaning or
tone changes when using the passive voice.
Original (Active Voice):
"The hurricane destroyed the town in just a few hours. The wind uprooted
trees, and the rain flooded streets. Volunteers worked tirelessly to help
those in need."
Task:
1. Rewrite the paragraph in passive voice.
2. Explain the difference: How does using the passive voice affect the
focus of the paragraph? Why is the passive voice often used in
scientific writing, news reports, or formal texts?
