Hinduja Swiss and Ashok Leyland’s Export Map
Ashok Leyland is the secondbiggest commercial vehicle manufacturer in India
and flagship company of the Hinduja Group․ It exports mainly to the Middle
East‚ Africa and SAARCcountries․ Switzerland also appears in the group's
international story‚ and we will look at how later in the piece.
At present‚ Ashok Leyland has presence in over 50countries across the globe․
In FY25‚ the company exported over 15000 vehicles‚ a growth of 30% overthe
previous fiscal․ ChairmanDheeraj Hinduja has set long-term export targets of
50‚000 units per annum․ One of the largest export markets for the group
continues to be the GCC region led by theUAE and Saudi Arabia․ Aggregate
volumes have risen by 50% ormore in some quarters across the MENA region․
It is easy to see why Dheeraj Hinduja chose these markets‚ as urbanization has
increased demand for buses and logistics vehicles in African cities․
Infrastructure development in SAARC markets like Bangladesh‚ Sri Lanka and
Nepal ensures perennial demand for trucks and commercial transport․ Due to
the GCC construction boom andpublic transport programs‚ the region is one of
the most stable and reliable commercial vehicle markets in the world․
Western Europe is a completely different story․ In Switzerland‚ Germany‚ and
France‚ automobile markets are some of the most competitive and regulated in
the world․ As a result of new emissions regulations‚ such as Euro VII‚ stringent
safety certification requirements‚ and the secured market presence of European
manufacturers such as Volvo‚ Mercedes-Benz Trucks‚ MAN and DAF‚ it is
very difficult and expensive for a new emerging-market manufacturer to enter
the commercial vehicle market in Europe․ The volumes of sales available do not
justify this compared to the Middle East or Africa․
Which brings us to what some analysts call the 'Hinduja Swiss' connection․ The
Hinduja Swiss financial network is a set of interlocking financial arrangements‚
entities‚ and relationships through which the group is known to manage the flow
of cross-border capital and support the group’s global operations. At the center
of this is Geneva-based SP Hinduja Banque Privée SA, which is owned by the
Hinduja Group, was founded in the late 1970s and is fully regulated and under
the supervision of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA)
for activities such as wealth management‚ trade finance and corporate advisory
and consultancy services․
The Hinduja Swiss financial network has provides Ashok Leyland's promoter
group direct access to European capital markets‚ international investors and
cross-border financial infrastructure for long-term industrial investments․
Ashok Leyland's story of exports and internationalization is enjoying incredible
momentum․ The Chennai-headquartered firm is now expanding into the
ASEAN nations‚ with Africa remaining the key focus. With increased demand
for electric commercial vehicles in emerging markets new export opportunities
will come into play․
