• According to Smith et l. (2012), hearing
impairment refers to a loss of hearing that makes
it difficult for individuals to process linguistic
information through hearing.
CAUSES OF HEARING IMPAIRMENTS
1. One of the causes of hearing impairment is chronical ear
infection.Otitis Media infection causes the fluids to build up
behind the ear dram which causes the interference with the
transmission of sound from out ear to the inner ear.
2. Exposure to loud sounds is another cause of hearing
impairment.
When a child is prolong exposed to loud noise, the delicate cells
in the ear can get damaged. Therefore, this can lead to the failure
of cells to detect sound waves, hence, causing loss of hearing.
CONT..
3. Also, genetic disorder is another cause of hearing
impairment.
Genetic issues can cause the abnormality in the
development of the ear structures such the tympanic
membrane, Malleus and vestibulocochlear/auditory
never which my cause the ear to malfunction.
EFFECTS OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT ON
EFFECTIVE LEARNING (Hallahan et l., 2018)
1.It creates difficulties in understanding verbal
instruction.
Students with hearing impairments struggles to grasp
verbal instruction and to understand the instruction
clearly during the lesson due to the in ability to hear. So,
because most of the time teaching relies on explanation
and discussions these students miss out a lot of
information and instruction in the course of learning.
CONT..
2.It causes delays in language communication.
Comprehending verbal words plays a crucial role in
development of language.
So, when a learner fails to hear sounds properly and
conversation around them, this may this may slow down
the development of their vocabulary and grammar
which cause the students to have a lot of difficulties in
expressing themselves.
CONT..
3. It causes limited participation during class
lesson.
Students with hearing impairments mostly fail or
find it difficult to participate during the classroom
lesson.
This is because the barrier in communication
prevents students from being aligned with the
whole class
INTERVATION TO BE USED TO HELP STUDENTS WITH
HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN LEARNING (Heward, 2013)
1.Employ the use of visual aids for the learners with hearing
impairment.
2.Use cooperative learning and peer support.
3.Adapting a good teaching method and pace.
