AE241: Combustion
Assignment #1
Assigned date: 15-Jan-26 // Due date: 02-Feb-26 (11.59 pm)
Instructions
•
Prepare and submit the report in PDF format created either with Word or LaTeX. The report should
be prepared rigorously, as if you are submitting this to a journal. The report should detail how you
have completed each step. Results should include plots, observations, and explanations for the
trends. The quality of report will also be graded.
•
Submit the following files (as applicable) in a single zip file: .py python script, .cti mechanism
files, .m or .mat Matlab files, and the report. Avoid excel sheets/plots. Name the zip file as your
first name and last name, e.g., Stephen Turns. In the report put your details (name, SR no., etc.),
so there will be no mix-up.
•
Submission through Teams.
In case of any exceptional difficulty, submit it by email before the deadline.
Email id: irfanmulla@iisc.ac.in
Subject: AE241 Assignment 01 your first name and last name. E.g., AE241 Assignment 01
Stephen Turns.
Plagiarism/collusion will result in a grade penalty, with a marks deduction of typically between
20-50%. You will need to work independently.
Submission deadline: 02nd Feb 2026 11:59 pm
Teams will not allow late submissions.

Tasks:
T1. Compute equilibrium adiabatic flame temperature (Tad) at constant pressure for n-butane-air
mixtures for equivalence ratio (𝜙𝜙) range of 0.6 to 1.4 (use a step of 0.1). The initial pressure and
temperature of the reactants are 1 atm and 298 K, respectively. Use CANTERA kinetics simulation
tool with a suitable reaction mechanism.
1. Justify your mechanism choice.
2. Plot the variation of Tad and mole fractions of major and minor species for the 𝜙𝜙 range
specified. Include the following species in your plots: CO2, CO, H2O, H2, H, OH, O2, O,
NO, N2, and N (like Figs. 2.13 and 2.14 in Turns, p. 47-48).
3. For 𝜙𝜙 = 1, tabulate Tad and mole fractions of the above major and minor species.
4. Provide an explanation for the above trends.
5. Suggest an optimum 𝜙𝜙 for the least NO and CO emissions.
T2. Variation of peak equilibrium adiabatic flame temperature with fuel type:
1. Using the same mechanism as of T1, obtain a peak equilibrium Tad at constant pressure of
P = 1 atm (with 𝜙𝜙) for methane, ethane, propane, n-butane. Plot this peak Tad and
corresponding 𝜙𝜙 with C/H ratio of each fuel. Comment on the results.
2. Compare your calculated values with measurements reported in the literature for either Tad
at 𝜙𝜙 = 1 or for peak Tad for each fuel. You can do this validation at alternative 𝜙𝜙 where
measured data is available.
