Becoming the True You
Astrology, Identity, and the Soul’s Design
In his book Do the True You: Stop Faking It for Others and Find
Out Who God Says You Are, pastor and author Steven Furtick
explores a question that many people struggle with—especially in
adolescence and early adulthood:
Who am I really supposed to be?
Many people spend years trying to fit into roles that others expect
from them—family expectations, social trends, cultural pressures,
or peer approval. We learn to smile when we are struggling,
pretend we are confident when we feel lost, and shape ourselves
to match what others want to see.
But the core message of Furtick’s book is simple and powerful:
you were not created to imitate someone else’s life.
You were created with a unique design.
Interestingly, this idea resonates strongly with astrology, which for
thousands of years has described the birth chart as a cosmic
blueprint of the soul’s individuality.
The Birth Chart: A Map of Divine Individuality
In astrology, the moment of birth is believed to imprint a symbolic
pattern on the individual life. The positions of the planets create a
unique chart that no one else shares exactly.
This is why astrologers often say:
The birth chart is not a cage. It is a design.
Each person arrives with distinct strengths, talents, emotional
needs, and life lessons. Rather than forcing us into a universal
template, astrology emphasizes that every life path is different.
In this sense, the birth chart can be understood as a map of the
potential identity that we are meant to grow into.
The Sun: The Core of the True Self
The most important symbol of authentic identity in astrology is the
Sun.
The Sun represents:
● Our essential nature
● The core self we are meant to become
● The life force that drives our growth
2
While many people identify with their Sun sign casually,
astrologically it represents something deeper: the direction of our
personal evolution.
In early life, people often feel disconnected from their Sun qualities
because they are still developing. Instead, they may act according
to external expectations or social pressure.
Over time, however, life encourages us to grow toward our Sun’s
expression—the authentic self that feels most alive and
meaningful.
The Mask vs. the Self
Astrology also recognizes that people sometimes live through a
“mask.”
This mask is often associated with the Ascendant, or rising sign,
which describes how we present ourselves to the world.
The rising sign helps us navigate social environments, but it is not
always the deepest layer of identity.
Sometimes individuals become so focused on maintaining their
external image that they lose contact with their inner nature. They
perform roles instead of living authentically.
Furtick’s message about “stopping the fake version of yourself”
parallels this astrological insight.
Real growth occurs when we move from performing identity to
living identity.
Life’s Challenges as Identity Formation
Another theme of spiritual and astrological traditions is that our
struggles often shape our authentic selves.
Astrology describes this through planetary influences that
challenge us—especially through Saturn, the planet associated
with responsibility, maturity, and long-term growth.
3
Saturn does not restrict identity to punish us. Instead, it pushes us
to develop discipline, resilience, and purpose.
In many charts, the areas where we experience the most difficulty
become the very places where we discover our strength and
calling.
Discovering the Gifts Within
Both spiritual teaching and astrology suggest that every individual
carries unique gifts.
Astrology identifies these gifts through the interaction of multiple
factors in the birth chart:
● The Sun reflects the central life purpose.
● The Moon reveals emotional wisdom and instinct.
● Mercury shows intellectual strengths.
● Venus indicates creativity and connection.
● Mars expresses courage and action.
Together, these planetary energies form a personal pattern that no
one else possesses in exactly the same way.
This uniqueness echoes the spiritual message that each person
is intentionally designed, not randomly assembled.
Living the True You
The journey toward authenticity is rarely immediate. It unfolds
gradually through experience, reflection, and growth.
Sometimes it requires letting go of identities that once helped us
belong but no longer represent who we truly are.
4
Astrology does not tell us who we must be. Instead, it offers a
language for understanding the deeper potentials already present
within us.
And in that sense, the birth chart can be viewed as a reminder of a
simple but powerful truth:
You were never meant to become someone else.
You were meant to become fully yourself.
