DEVELOPMENT OF UNIQUE DEVICE IDENTIFIER (UDI) FOR
MEDICAL DEVICES
ABSTRACT
A dedicated global identification protocol is needed to unambiguously identify
medical devices in the healthcare supply chain to increase accurate reporting,
reviewing, and analysing dysfunctional equipment, prevent counterfeiting of
medical devices by securing global supply and distribution chain and enhance the
patient safety.
When fully implemented, the label of most devices will include a Unique Device
Identifier (UDI) in human-and machine-readable form, which will ultimately
improve patient safety, modernize device post market surveillance, and facilitate
medical device information. The unique device identification system can help to
adequately identify medical devices sold in India from manufacturing through
distribution to patient use. UDI is a unique numeric or alphanumeric code that
generally consists of Device Identifier (DI) and Production Identifier (PI). The
main aim of this project is to create a unique identification number for most of
the medical devices available in India to identify type of device by medical
manufacturers, regulatory authorities, and users using HTML, CSS and
JavaScript. Further, the objective is to create a searchable database to hold
information about the operation and manufacturing of the medical device with
direct access to manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and users using MySQL,
NodeJS.
