Hermes Astrology
The Astrology Chart
Look up at the night sky. The stars and planets wheel overhead in
their ancient patterns, unchanged for millennia yet always in
motion. At the exact moment of your first breath, the cosmos
arranged itself in a unique configuration—a celestial snapshot that
belongs to you alone. This image, frozen in time and calculated for
the specific place of your birth, is your astrology chart.
Also known as a natal chart or birth chart, this circular diagram is
the fundamental tool of astrological practice. It is a map of the
heavens at the moment you entered the world, translated into a
symbolic language that reveals your core identity, your emotional
nature, your life purpose, and the patterns that shape your journey.
To the uninitiated, an astrology chart can look like an
indecipherable mass of symbols, lines, and numbers. But like any
language, it becomes accessible once you learn its basic
vocabulary and grammar. This introduction aims to provide a
comprehensive and accessible guide to understanding the
astrology chart for the absolute beginner.
1. What Is an Astrology Chart?
1.1 Core Definition
An astrology chart is a map of where the planets, sun, and moon
were positioned at the exact moment of your birth, as seen from
the specific location where you were born. It is calculated using
your birth date, your exact birth time, and your birth location.
The chart is a 360-degree circle divided into twelve segments
called houses. Around this circle, the twelve signs of the zodiac
appear in order. Within this framework, symbols representing the
planets are placed according to their positions at your birth.
1.2 The Fundamental Premise
Astrology is based on the principle of correspondence: as above,
so below. The patterns in the heavens reflect patterns in human
life. The positions of the planets at your birth are not causes of
your personality but symbols of it—a kind of cosmic clock showing
the energies you came into this life with.
The chart does not determine your fate. It describes tendencies,
potentials, and patterns. You have free will to work with or against
2
these energies. The chart is a tool for self-understanding, not a
prison sentence.
1.3 What the Chart Reveals
A complete astrology chart can reveal insights into many areas of
life:
● Your core identity and life purpose
● Your emotional nature and inner needs
● Your communication style and thinking patterns
● Your values, desires, and approach to love
● Your drive, ambition, and energy
● Your strengths and challenges
● Your relationship patterns
● Your career path and public role
● Your spiritual journey and life lessons
2. The Components of the Chart
Every astrology chart is constructed from four essential
components: planets, signs, houses, and aspects. Understanding
these four elements is the foundation of all astrological work.
2.1 The Planets: The What
The planets represent the fundamental energies or drives
operating within you. They are the actors in the drama of your life.
The Sun represents your core identity, your conscious ego, your
vital purpose. It is the essence of who you are.
The Moon represents your emotions, your instincts, your
unconscious responses. It is how you feel and what you need to
feel secure.
Mercury represents your mind, your communication style, how
you think and process information.
Venus represents your values, what you love, how you relate, your
aesthetic sense.
Mars represents your energy, your drive, how you assert yourself
and pursue what you want.
3
Jupiter represents expansion, growth, optimism, and where you
seek meaning.
Saturn represents structure, discipline, responsibility, and where
you face limitations and lessons.
Uranus represents change, innovation, rebellion, and where you
seek freedom.
Neptune represents dreams, illusions, spirituality, and where you
transcend ordinary boundaries.
Pluto represents transformation, power, regeneration, and where
you undergo profound change.
2.2 The Signs: The How
The signs modify how the planetary energies express themselves.
If the planets are the actors, the signs are the roles they play. Each
sign has its own qualities, elements, and modes.
Aries expresses through initiative, courage, and directness.
Taurus expresses through stability, sensuality, and persistence.
Gemini expresses through communication, curiosity, and
adaptability.
Cancer expresses through nurturing, emotion, and protectiveness.
Leo expresses through creativity, drama, and self-expression.
Virgo expresses through analysis, service, and attention to detail.
Libra expresses through harmony, relationship, and balance.
Scorpio expresses through intensity, depth, and transformation.
Sagittarius expresses through exploration, philosophy, and
adventure.
Capricorn expresses through ambition, structure, and discipline.
Aquarius expresses through innovation, humanity, and
detachment.
Pisces expresses through compassion, dreams, and dissolution.
2.3 The Houses: The Where
The houses represent the different areas or departments of life
where the planetary energies operate. If planets are the actors and
signs are the roles, houses are the stages where the drama
unfolds.
The First House governs identity, appearance, and how you
project yourself into the world.
4
The Second House governs money, possessions, values, and
self-worth.
The Third House governs communication, siblings, local travel,
and early education.
The Fourth House governs home, family, roots, and your inner
foundation.
The Fifth House governs creativity, romance, children, and
pleasure.
The Sixth House governs health, daily work, service, and routine.
The Seventh House governs partnerships, marriage, and
one-on-one relationships.
The Eighth House governs shared resources, intimacy,
transformation, and death.
The Ninth House governs higher education, philosophy, travel,
and spiritual seeking.
The Tenth House governs career, reputation, and your public role.
The Eleventh House governs friendships, groups, hopes, and
aspirations.
The Twelfth House governs the unconscious, solitude, endings,
and hidden things.
3. The Three Most Important Points in Your Chart
While every element matters, three points are considered
particularly significant for understanding your core identity.
3.1 The Sun Sign
Your sun sign is what most people know as their "sign." It
represents your core essence, your fundamental identity, your life
purpose. It is the center of your chart, the energy you are here to
develop and express.
When someone asks, "What's your sign?" they are asking for your
sun sign. But as you now know, the sun is only one part of a
complete picture.
3.2 The Moon Sign
Your moon sign reveals your emotional nature—how you feel, what
you need to feel secure, how you respond instinctively. It
represents your inner world, the part of you that may not be visible
to others but profoundly shapes your experience.

3.3 The Rising Sign (Ascendant)
Your rising sign is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at
the moment of your birth. It is perhaps the most personal point in
your chart because it changes every two hours. The rising sign
determines the placement of all the houses and colors how you
approach the world.
The rising sign represents your outward personality, the mask you
wear, the first impression you make. It is how others see you
before they get to know you. It also governs your physical
appearance and general approach to life.
Together, these three—sun, moon, and rising—form the core of
your identity.
4. How to Obtain Your Astrology Chart
Before you can read your chart, you must first obtain it. This
process is simpler than you might think.
4.1 The Essential Data
To generate an accurate astrology chart, you need three pieces of
information:
Your birth date. The month, day, and year you were born.
Your exact birth time. This is crucial. The time determines your
rising sign and the placement of houses, which shift every two
hours or so. If your birth time is off by even a few minutes, your
chart can be significantly different. Obtain your birth time from a
birth certificate or hospital records if possible.
Your birth location. The city and country where you were born.
This establishes the geographic coordinates used to calculate the
local horizon and meridian.
If you do not know your exact birth time, you can still generate a
chart using noon or sunrise as a default. However, you will not be
able to determine your rising sign or house placements with
certainty.

4.2 Free Online Tools
Several reputable websites offer free birth chart calculations:
Astrodienst is widely considered the gold standard for free charts.
It offers detailed calculations, multiple house systems, and
extensive background information.
Cafe Astrology provides a user-friendly interface with clear
explanations of chart components.
Astro-Seek offers another accessible option with detailed
interpretations and educational resources.
When you use these sites, you will receive a circular chart filled
with symbols. You are now ready to begin understanding what you
are looking at.
5. A Step-by-Step Guide to Reading Your Chart
5.1 Step One: Find Your Rising Sign
Locate the Ascendant, usually marked "Asc" or "AC" on your chart.
This is the sign that was rising at your birth. Note its sign. This is
your rising sign, and it sets the entire chart. The first house begins
here.
5.2 Step Two: Locate Your Sun and Moon
Find the symbols for the sun and moon. The sun is typically a
circle with a dot in the center. The moon is a crescent shape. Note
which signs and houses they occupy. You now have your sun,
moon, and rising—the three pillars of your personality.
5.3 Step Three: Identify the Other Planets
Find Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and
Pluto. For each planet, note the sign and house. These add depth
and nuance to your chart.
5.4 Step Four: Look at the Houses
Notice which signs are on the cusp of each house. This shows
how you approach each area of life. Note any planets placed in
houses—these areas will be especially significant.
7
5.5 Step Five: Examine the Aspects
Look at the lines connecting planets on your chart. These
represent aspects. Note which planets are connected and by
which aspects. This reveals how the different parts of your
personality interact.
5.6 Step Six: Look for Patterns
Are several planets concentrated in one sign or house? This
indicates a focus of energy in that area. Are planets spread
evenly? This suggests a balanced nature. Are there many planets
in fire signs, earth signs, air signs, or water signs? This reveals
your elemental balance.
