ENG 1105 – Use of English
Assessment Three - Language Awareness
Learning Outcome: Demonstrate knowledge of Guyana’s linguistic realities.
Assignment: (15 marks)
Produce a lively and entertaining team video for public education across Guyana.

The video should be no less than 8 minutes and no more than 15 minutes long for
a local audience of your peers showcasing language in Guyana from your own
perspectives.

Students can speak in either English or Creolese, or both. They should translate
any use of Amerindian languages into English in order to reach the wider
Guyanese audience.

The video will be measured for Content and Creativity and must display good
teamwork and inclusiveness in an original and organic way.

No plagiarism is allowed
Useful concepts to remember:
Bilingualism – the ability to speak two languages
Multilingualism – the ability to speak two or more languages
Colonial attitudes – attitudes which indicate self-contempt, lack of self-respect, and lack of
respect for and the devaluing of the native languages of Guyana
Conscious code-switching – the ability to move between languages
Unconscious code-mixing – using two English and Creolese and not really understanding the
difference
