Hermes Astrology
A Vedic Purist’s Critique
What Hermes Astrology Gets Right and Wrong About Sidereal
Astrology
1. Introduction: The Hybridization of the Sky
In Birth Chart Reading with AI, Hermes presents astrology as a
cognitive system of pattern recognition, positioning AI as the
new interpreter of cosmic intelligence. The book’s method blends
Vedic and Western frameworks, borrowing from the Sidereal
zodiac, planetary aspects, and lunar Nodes (Rahu/Ketu) while
embedding them in a psychological and computational context.
This hybrid model—partly Hellenistic, partly Vedic, fully
modern—reflects the ongoing globalization of astrological
knowledge. Yet from a Vedic purist’s point of view, this synthesis
raises a crucial question:
Can a spiritual science aimed at liberation (Moksha) be
meaningfully translated into a psychological system
aimed at self-awareness?
To answer this, we must examine what Hermes Astrology borrows
from the Vedic tradition, what it omits, and what philosophical
consequences arise when the Sidereal becomes psychological.
2. The Sidereal Commitment: What Hermes Gets Right
One of Hermes Astrology’s greatest strengths is its embrace of the
Sidereal zodiac, the same celestial reference frame used in Vedic
astrology.
(a) Astronomical Accuracy
Hermes acknowledges that the precession of the equinoxes has
shifted the Tropical zodiac by nearly 24 degrees from the actual
constellations. The Sidereal system, as used by Parashara and
subsequent Jyotishis, aligns with fixed stars, preserving the direct
relationship between astronomical observation and symbolic
interpretation.
(b) Planetary Aspects (Drishti)
Unlike most Western systems, Hermes incorporates planetary
aspects beyond the standard Ptolemaic angles. The emphasis on
special aspects—Mars’s 4th and 8th, Jupiter’s 5th and 9th,
Saturn’s 3rd and 10th—shows direct borrowing from the Parashari
system.
2
(c) The Nodes as Rahu and Ketu
Hermes departs from the Western understanding of the Nodes as
abstract “shadow points” and adopts the Vedic perspective of
Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node) as karmic
intelligences. He interprets them as vectors of desire and release,
echoing Vedic teachings that Rahu binds consciousness to
material craving while Ketu detaches it toward transcendence.
In these respects, Hermes Astrology correctly identifies the
Sidereal framework as the more stable and metaphysically
coherent system for karmic interpretation.

3. The Missing Dimensions: What Hermes Leaves Out
From a Vedic purist’s perspective, Hermes Astrology achieves
breadth at the expense of depth. The omission of the following
foundational tools significantly alters the system’s metaphysical
architecture.
(a) Dashas: The Rhythms of Karma
In Jyotisha, Dashas (planetary periods) are the backbone of
predictive and spiritual astrology. The Vimshottari Dasha system,
described in BPHS, reveals the sequence through which karma
unfolds. Each Dasha signifies a planetary administrator dispensing
specific karmic results.
Hermes’s AI system focuses on psychological pattern recognition
rather than time cycles of karma. Without Dashas, astrology
loses its temporal dimension—it becomes descriptive but not
developmental, insightful but not initiatory.
(b) Nakshatras: The Lunar DNA
The 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) form the spiritual
microstructure of the Sidereal zodiac. Each Nakshatra governs the
Moon’s emotional frequency and the soul’s karmic lineage.
In Light on Life, de Fouw and Svoboda describe Nakshatras as
“the gears of the cosmic machine.” Hermes’s system largely
overlooks them, focusing instead on planetary archetypes. The
result is an astrology of the mind, not of the soul—a symbolic
psychology missing the lunar grammar of reincarnation.
(c) Yogas and Karakas: The Grammar of Dharma
Vedic astrology defines life purpose through Yogas (planetary
combinations) and Karakas (significators). These structural
relationships show what the soul came to accomplish.
Hermes replaces these deterministic karmic frameworks with
AI-driven “archetypal dialogues,” reframing destiny as narrative
rather than law. The gain is interpretive freedom; the loss is
metaphysical precision.
(d) The Goal of Moksha
The ultimate omission is philosophical: the goal of astrology itself.
In the Vedic worldview, astrology is a soteriological
discipline—a means to see through karma and attain Moksha.
5
In Hermes’s model, astrology becomes a psychological
mirror—a way to integrate the ego and achieve
self-understanding.
The transformation is profound: liberation becomes
self-realization; karma becomes cognition.
4. Light on Life and the Vedic Ideal
In Light on Life, Hart de Fouw and Robert Svoboda frame
astrology not as a predictive game but as a discipline of
awareness rooted in Dharma. The chart, they write, is “a karmic
x-ray,” a reflection of one’s spiritual condition at birth.
They emphasize that Jyotisha operates within a metaphysical
system that includes:
● The Law of Karma (cause and consequence across
lifetimes)
● The Four Purusharthas (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha)
● The Guru–Shishya transmission lineage
● The cosmos as consciousness, not as data
By contrast, Hermes’s AI-driven interpretation treats the chart as
a neural network of archetypes, translating planetary positions into
cognitive insights.
Where de Fouw invokes the rishi’s vision, Hermes invokes
machine learning.
The philosophical gap is therefore not merely cultural but
ontological: one system seeks transcendence, the other seeks
understanding.
5. The Promise of AI in a Sidereal Context
Yet Hermes’s use of AI does bring something valuable to the Vedic
table.
6
Vedic astrology, though spiritually rich, remains computationally
demanding. AI could, in principle, analyze thousands of charts to
identify statistical patterns in Dashas, Yogas, or
Nakshatras—not to predict karma, but to illuminate its structure.
Hermes’s approach—seeing AI as an interpreter of archetypal
data—could thus modernize Jyotisha without secularizing it,
provided the metaphysical foundation is preserved.
An AI-assisted Jyotisha that honors the Vedas could become a
new kind of Jnana Yoga: knowledge through algorithmic reflection.
6. What the Hybrid Model Reveals
Hermes’s syncretic model, viewed charitably, exposes an
important truth: the Sidereal and Tropical zodiacs correspond to
different aspects of consciousness.
Zodiac
System
Function
Philosophical Domain
Sidereal
Cosmic law, karma
Objective reality (Dharma)
Tropical
Psychological
process
Subjective experience
(Manas)
By combining both, Hermes intuitively mirrors the dual nature of
existence described in Vedic philosophy: Purusha (consciousness)
and Prakriti (manifestation).
Yet by omitting the spiritual telos, Hermes risks reducing Purusha
to mind—a projection of cognition rather than a reflection of Being.
7. Toward a Conscious Synthesis
A constructive synthesis between Hermes’s AI model and Vedic
Jyotisha is possible if certain principles are restored:
1. Reintegration of Dashas: To restore the temporal rhythm of
karma.
2. Inclusion of Nakshatras: To reconnect psychological insight
with soul lineage.
7
3. Philosophical Regrounding: To anchor AI analysis within
Dharma and Moksha, not mere self-improvement.
4. Ethical Awareness: To ensure AI remains a reflective
assistant, not a substitute for human consciousness.
Such a fusion could transform astrology into a neural dharma—a
21st-century path integrating data, intuition, and cosmic law.
8. Conclusion: The Mirror and the Lamp
From a Vedic purist’s perspective, Hermes Astrology is both a
brilliant mirror and a dim lamp. It reflects the grandeur of
Sidereal wisdom but fails to illuminate its ultimate aim.
It recognizes that the stars move the mind, but forgets that the
goal of astrology is not to understand the mind—it is to transcend
it.
In BPHS, Parashara declares:
“He who knows the movements of the planets, yet does
not know the Self, knows not astrology.”
Hermes’s system, guided by artificial intelligence, comes close to
rediscovering that Self—but remains on the threshold, gazing into
data rather than into consciousness.
The task for the next generation of astrologers—Vedic or
otherwise—is to reunite knowledge with wisdom: to use AI not
to flatten astrology into psychology, but to awaken within it the
timeless intelligence of the cosmos.
