AstroCartoGraphy
AstroCartoGraphy—often called locational astrology—is the
revolutionary practice of mapping the planetary energies of your
birth chart onto the surface of the Earth. It answers one of life's
most compelling questions: "Where on this planet will I thrive,
struggle, find love, or discover my purpose?" Developed in the
1970s by American astrologer Jim Lewis, it transforms the natal
chart from a static snapshot of the sky above your birthplace into a
dynamic, interactive world map of your potential. It posits that
the angular power of the planets—their strength when positioned
on the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, or Imum Coeli
lines—shifts dramatically depending on your geographic location.
By moving, you effectively re-cast your birth chart with new
angles, activating different life themes with profound intensity.
This is astrology as geographical destiny. It reveals that certain
cities, countries, or regions are not neutral backdrops, but active
co-authors in the story of your life, amplifying specific planetary
energies that can lead to career breakthroughs, spiritual
awakenings, tumultuous relationships, or deep inner peace.
The Core Mechanics: Planetary Lines and the Four
Angles
The system is elegantly simple in concept but rich in interpretation.
An AstroCartoGraphy map is generated by calculating where each
planet was angular (rising, setting, culminating, or
anti-culminating) at the moment of your birth, across all
longitudes and latitudes.
This produces a world map crisscrossed by planetary lines, each
marking where that planet's influence is powerfully emphasized.
The four types of lines are defined by the house cusp they
represent in a relocated chart:
1. MC (Midheaven) Lines (Green/Blue): Where the planet
was culminating at the zenith. This line activates the 10th
House energy of that planet: Career, public reputation, life
purpose, achievement, and social status. This is often the
most sought-after line for professional success.
○ Jupiter MC Line: A place for career expansion, honor,
and becoming a "big fish."
○ Saturn MC Line: A place for building a serious,
enduring career through hard work and discipline.
2. IC (Imum Coeli) Lines (Purple/Black): Where the planet
was at the nadir, beneath the Earth. This activates 4th
House energy: Home, roots, family, private life, real
estate, and your innermost foundation.
○ Moon IC Line: A place to put down deep emotional
roots, feel nurtured, and connect with family.
○ Uranus IC Line: A place where your home life is
unpredictable, innovative, or unstable.
3. Ascendant (AC) Lines (Red): Where the planet was rising
on the eastern horizon. This activates 1st House energy:
Self, identity, body, personality, and how you initiate life.
○ Sun Asc Line: A place where you shine, your vitality is
high, and you are seen as a leader.
2
○ Neptune Asc Line: A place where your identity feels
diffuse; you may be idealized or misunderstood, but
also spiritually inspired.
4. Descendant (DC) Lines (Orange): Where the planet was
setting on the western horizon. This activates 7th House
energy: Partnerships, marriage, open enemies, and
significant one-on-one relationships.
○ Venus DC Line: The classic "relationship line,"
attracting love, harmony, and artistic partnerships.
○ Mars DC Line: Attracts passionate, combative, or
highly energetic partners; potential for conflict.
The Power of the "Zero Point": Where two lines cross—for
example, where your Jupiter MC line intersects your Venus DC
line—creates a super-charged location where both themes (e.g.,
career success and fortunate relationships) are amplified together.
Interpreting the Map: Beyond Simple "Good" and
"Bad"
A novice might seek only Jupiter and Venus lines, fleeing from
Saturn and Pluto lines. The master interpreter understands that
all lines offer gifts and challenges, and the "best" line depends
entirely on your life goals and soul's needs.
● Jupiter Lines (Expansion): Bring opportunity, luck, and
growth. But they can also lead to over-expansion, weight
gain, or over-optimism. A Jupiter line might be perfect for
launching a business, but terrible for a recovering gambler.
● Saturn Lines (Structure): Bring tests, delays, hard work,
and discipline. They are excellent for building something
lasting, pursuing an advanced degree, or developing
maturity. They can feel restrictive but build immense inner
strength.
● Pluto Lines (Transformation): Bring intensity, power
struggles, obsession, and profound rebirth. They are places
where you encounter your shadow and are forced to
transform. A Pluto line could be the site of a devastating loss
or the place you uncover your deepest personal
power—often both.
● Chiron Lines (Healing): Indicate places where deep
wounds surface to be healed, and where you may become
3
a healer for others. They are challenging but profoundly
meaningful.
● Lunar Node Lines (Destiny): The North Node line points
to a location that pulls you toward your future growth and
soul's purpose. The South Node line indicates a place of
karmic comfort, past-life familiarity, but potential
stagnation.
Practical Applications and Life-Changing Stories
● The Career Pilgrimage: An artist struggling in their
hometown moves to a city on their Neptune MC line
(imagination, artistry). There, they find a supportive
community of creatives and gain recognition for their
visionary work.
● The Relationship Quest: Someone chronically single
relocates to their Venus DC line and within a year meets a
life partner, as if the location itself magnetized the
relationship.
● The Spiritual Journey: A seeker travels to their Neptune IC
or Chiron Asc line, leading to a mystical experience,
enrollment in a meditation retreat, or a profound
psychological healing.
● The Expatriate's Choice: A person considering emigration
discovers their prospective new country is under a Sun
MC/Saturn Asc conjunction. They correctly anticipate a life
where career success (Sun MC) is achieved only through
immense personal discipline and cultural adaptation (Saturn
Asc).
Advanced Techniques: Parans and Local Space
Jim Lewis's system also includes paran lines—lines connecting
points where a planet was simultaneously angular with a specific
fixed star. This adds a layer of mythological and archetypal
flavor to a location (e.g., a Regulus paran bringing kingly
challenges or honors).
Local Space is a related technique that creates a 360-degree
compass chart from your birthplace, showing the direction
(azimuth) where each planet's energy is focused. This can be used
for more localized moves: "My Venus line runs directly toward the
city 50 miles east of here."

Philosophical Implications: Are We Geographic
Beings?
AstroCartoGraphy challenges the notion of a uniformly
experienced destiny. It suggests that where you are is as
astrologically significant as when you were born. It supports
the idea of geomancy—that the Earth itself has a spirit and
specific locations resonate with specific cosmic frequencies. Your
birth chart is your soul's potential; your AstroCartoGraphy map
shows where on Earth that potential is most likely to be
activated.
It also raises questions about free will and travel. A weekend visit
to a powerful line might trigger a meaningful encounter. Moving to
a challenging line consciously, to undertake its lessons, is an act
of astrological courage.
A Tool for Conscious Migration
In an age of global mobility, AstroCartoGraphy is the ultimate tool
for intentional living. It advises against random relocation and
instead offers a cosmic roadmap.
To use it wisely:
1. Generate your map (Jim Lewis's official site or major
astrology software).
2. Never look at lines in isolation. Synthesize: What planet?
Which angle? What other lines are nearby?
3. Context is everything. A Pluto line's intensity will manifest
differently for a 20-year-old student versus a 50-year-old
CEO.
4. Visit before you move. Take a trip to a powerful line and
feel its energy.
5. Remember integration. A "perfect" location cannot override
deep-seated psychological patterns. The outer journey must
accompany an inner one.
Ultimately, AstroCartoGraphy teaches that we are citizens of both
Earth and Sky. Our birthplace is our cosmic hometown, but the
world is dotted with astrological embassies where different facets
of our soul hold diplomatic power. To read your map is to discover
that the planet is not a random stage, but a personalized, living
5
atlas of destiny, inviting you to find the places where you are,
quite literally, written into the landscape.
