Ashtakavarga
Ashtakavarga is one of the most sophisticated, nuanced, and
mathematically intricate tools in the entire corpus of Vedic
astrology (Jyotish). Translating to "Eightfold Division of
Strengths," it is a micro-analytical system that moves beyond
the broad strokes of planetary dignity and house placement to
measure the precise, point-by-point benefic and malefic
influence of each planet in every single degree of the zodiac—as
it relates to a specific individual's birth chart. It is astrology as
quantitative fine art, a method that reveals not just if a planet is
strong, but exactly where in the zodiac its energy will be most
supportive or harmful for that native alone.
Unlike the universal rules of sign rulership or exaltation,
Ashtakavarga creates a personalized celestial map of auspicious
and inauspicious zones. It answers the profound question: "Given
the unique arrangement of my birth chart, where in the sky will
each planet act as my best friend, and where as my subtle
adversary?"
The Foundational Principle: The Bindu and Rekha
The system operates on a simple binary code that yields complex
results:
● Bindu (Dot): A malefic point. It indicates a degree where a
planet's influence is weak, obstructive, or negative for the
native.
● Rekha (Line): A benefic point. It indicates a degree where
a planet's influence is strong, supportive, and positive.
These points are not arbitrary. They are derived from the specific,
permanent relationships each planet holds with the seven
classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus,
Saturn) from its own position in the natal chart. Rahu and Ketu
are excluded from the basic calculation, emphasizing the system's
focus on tangible, personal karma.
The Two Primary Layers: Bhinnashtakavarga and
Sarvashtakavarga
Understanding Ashtakavarga requires navigating its two
fundamental layers:
1. Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) – The Individual Planet's
Scorecard
This is the core building block. A separate chart (grid) is
created for each of the seven planets. In your "Mars
Ashtakavarga," you see a zodiac wheel divided into 12 signs and
further into degrees. It shows, from Mars' perspective in your
chart, which specific degrees are benefic (Rekha) or malefic
(Bindu) for you.
How is it calculated? The calculation is fixed and rule-based. For
each planet (the "subject planet"), you assess its relationship to the
sign positions of all seven planets (including itself) in the natal
2
chart. Based on ancient rules (found in texts like Brihat Parashara
Hora Shastra), certain planets cast benefic points into certain
signs from their natal position. For example, Jupiter casts benefic
points into the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th signs from
where it sits in your chart. These points are tallied for each sign to
create that planet's personal BAV.
● Meaning: Your Sun's BAV shows where the solar principle
(soul, authority, vitality) will be most fortified or diminished for
you. Your Saturn's BAV maps the zones where Saturnine
lessons (discipline, delay, structure) will be bearable or
especially harsh.
2. Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) – The Consolidated Master Map
This is the summation and ultimate tool. The SAV is created by
adding together the Bindu/Rekha totals from all seven
individual BAV charts, sign by sign. You get one master grid
showing the total benefic points in each of the 12 signs, ranging
from a theoretical minimum of 0 to a maximum of 56 (7 planets x 8
possible points each? Not exactly, due to rules, but the max is 8
per planet per sign).
● The Golden Rule: A sign with 25 or more points is
considered auspicious. 28+ points is highly auspicious.
A sign with fewer than 25 points, especially below 20, is
considered weak or inauspicious for triggering events.
● The SAV provides the critical judgment: It tells you the
inherent strength of every house in your chart, because
each house is ruled by a sign. A 1st house (Ascendant sign)
with 32 points indicates a powerful, supportive life path
and robust health. A 7th house (Descendant sign) with 18
points suggests challenges and necessary effort in
partnerships.
Practical Applications: The Power of Precision
Ashtakavarga is not theoretical; it is a practitioner's workhorse
for refining predictions.
1. House Strength Assessment (The Most Common Use):
The SAV score for each house (sign) is a primary gauge of that life
area's fortune. A strong 10th house (career) with high points will
yield success with less struggle, even if its lord is weak. A weak
3
6th house (health, debt) with low points indicates a need for
constant vigilance in those matters.
2. Gochara (Transit) Analysis – The Killer App:
This is where Ashtakavarga shines with unparalleled precision.
When judging the effect of a transiting planet, you do NOT look at
its transit through a generic sign. You analyze its transit
specifically through the degrees that are benefic (Rekha) for
that planet in your personal BAV.
● Example: Saturn is transiting through Libra for two and a
half years. In your Saturn BAV, perhaps only 10° to 18°
Libra contain benefic points (Rekha). The astrologer would
predict that the truly beneficial, constructive, or
karmically rewarding results of Saturn in Libra will only
manifest during the months it transits those specific 8
degrees. The rest of Saturn's journey through Libra may be
neutral or difficult. This allows for incredibly granular
timing.
3. Planetary Strength (Shadbala Integration):
The total number of benefic points a planet receives in its own BAV
(i.e., the points in the sign it occupies natally) is used as a factor in
the monumental Shadbala system, which calculates a planet's
strength on a 0 to 16 scale. Ashtakavarga contributes to the
Chesta Bala (motivational strength) of a planet.
4. Varshaphala (Annual Yearly Chart) Judgment:
In analyzing a Solar Return chart, the SAV of the annual chart is
cast and compared to the natal SAV. Strengths and weaknesses in
the annual chart's houses are judged by their point totals, providing
a detailed blueprint for the year's themes.
Calculating the "Triṃśamśa" Strength: The 1/30th
Division
A further refinement is assessing a planet's strength in its own
drekkana (decante) or triṃśamśa (1/30th division of a sign). A
planet is considered strong if it is placed in a portion of a sign
where it scores 4 or more benefic points in its own BAV. This is
another layer of micro-conditionality.

Philosophical Underpinnings: The Karmic Ledger
Ashtakavarga is deeply karmic. The distribution of points is
believed to reflect the accumulated merits and demerits
(sanchita karma) from past lives. A sign brimming with benefic
points represents an area where you have built good spiritual
credit. A sign starved of points indicates a life department where
your karmic account is low, requiring conscious effort and Dharma
to build up strength.
It embodies the Vedic principle that astrology is personal. Two
people with the Sun at 15° Aries will have radically different
Ashtakavarga charts because the Sun's relationship to their other
six planets is unique. It maps your soul's individual relationship
with each celestial force.
A Daunting but Rewarding Mastery
For the student, Ashtakavarga is famously complex to calculate
manually, though modern software generates it instantly. The
challenge lies not in the math, but in the synthesis. A master
Jyotishi will weigh the SAV house strengths against planetary
dignity, Dasha periods, and transits, creating a prediction of
breathtaking specificity: *"During the sub-period of Mercury in your
Venus major period, when Mercury transits the 12th to 18th
degrees of Gemini—which are fortified by 6 benefic points in your
Mercury BAV—you will receive the financial gains related to that
property matter."*
Ashtakavarga is the ultimate testament to Vedic astrology's pursuit
of precision. It refuses vague generalities. It demands that the
cosmos speak in specifics, and it provides the meticulous
codebook to translate that speech into the detailed story of a
human life. To use it is to move from astrology as poetry to
astrology as exact spiritual accounting.
