UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST COLLEGE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (FINANCE) STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT BY ISAAC ODUM (SB/DFN/24/0131) FOUNTAIN HEAD UNIVERSITY-TEMA 2026 A SUMMARY REPORT OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF FIVE LISTED COMPANIES FOR THE PERIOD 2022-2024. Introduction In Ghana, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has turned out to be a very important strategic move by which companies are able to not only deliver sustainable national development, but also earn a good reputation and stakeholder involvement as a side effect. A few of the mentioned firms are quite sure that the banks, among which are Fidelity Bank Ghana, Unilever Ghana, ADB Bank Ghana PLC, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, and CalBank, are already very committed to the provision of nationwide social investment in education, health, environment, youth and women, financial inclusiveness, and community empowerment from 2022 to 2024. The enterprises have made use of community-based projects together with enterprise-driven interventions throughout the social impact period, thus combining them and ensuring measurable and lasting benefits. The companies’ CSR activities touched upon the areas of community needs, such as school infrastructure, hygiene and skills training. In addition, they facilitated economic participation, environmental preservation, and youth entrepreneurship, which can be seen as a clear transition from the use of traditional charity to strategic, results-oriented social investments that are in harmony with Ghana's socio-economic growth priorities. 1. Fidelity Bank Ghana Fidelity Bank Ghana's corporate social responsibility policy, which was both ground-breaking and impactful, covered six major areas from 2022 to 2024: education, community upliftment and 2 empowerment, health, environmental conservation, financial inclusion, and small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). The Orange Impact Initiative was also launched by the bank in 2022, and its aim was to equip 7 schools with infrastructure and learning resources by the year 2024. Bank Staff regularly participated in the community through volunteering and outreach, which allowed them to be of continuous assistance to orphaned children, the disabled and neglected. The budget for CSR activities that was set aside by Fidelity Bank for the year 2024 was GHS 5.74 million, and more than 26,000 persons directly benefited from the projects in women empowerment, environment, education, and health. The bank not only provided investment and mentorship to 103 SMEs but also, through the Fidelity Young Entrepreneurship Fund and Orange Corners, facilitated them with the technical support needed for establishing and growing youth entrepreneurship. The collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was among the strategic alliances that resulted in the improvement of financial services for more than 15,000 people and the accumulation of over GH¢65 million in savings at the same time. The CSR initiatives of Fidelity Bank have not only been recognised in the local market but also in the international market; therefore, obtaining the awards of Best CSR Bank Ghana and Best ESG Bank of the Year 2024, as the Bank's supremacy in environment-friendly and community-friendly development is undoubtedly established. The authentic data for 2022 and 2023 is limited, but the numbers and activities for 2024 indicate that the bank is very much aware of its social investment through financial commitment with measurable social impact, thus turning into a major player in Ghana's socio-economic growth. 3 2. Unilever Ghana From 2022 to 2024, Unilever Ghana, through its diverse CSR programs, displayed a very organised and extremely beneficial social as well as ecological development. The company directed its resources mainly into the public health, hygiene, education, women's empowerment, and environmental sustainability sectors, and mostly performed these activities through the Unilever Ghana Foundation and collaboration. By way of illustration, the Lifebuoy health and hygiene campaigns drew more than one million schoolchildren to the subjects of handwashing, oral hygiene, and nutrition. Meanwhile, the oral health campaigns conducted in partnership with World Vision Ghana had more than 25,000 children and 30,000 community members as direct beneficiaries. The company reached out to thousands of pupils in the education sector by constructing and upgrading hygiene facilities in Tema and adjacent districts, and consequently improved the sanitation conditions in the schools. Women's empowerment led to skills training programs with the participation of 120 women in small and medium enterprises; thus, their economic engagement and entrepreneurship were improved. A major environmental benefit has been the company's zero non-hazardous waste to landfill policy, beach cleaning and recycling collaborations like the Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises. The company, besides the recycling partnership with the Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises, has also won several awards, like the CSR Manufacturing Company of the Year at the Ghana CSR Excellence Awards, which is a commendation of its good influence on the environment and the community. Therefore, Unilever Ghana's CSR policy during this time was not only a way of supporting the community but also an evolved strategic and inter-sectoral partnership with measurable impacts in the fields of public health, education, gender inclusion, and environmental sustainability. 4 3. ADB Bank Ghana PLC Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) Ghana PLC has been making a statement through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities from 2022 to 2024, which are mainly focused on rural development, education, health, and environmental sustainability, and are a little more intensive on the agricultural communities. The bank’s investment in CSR activities of GH¢5.3 million in 2022 was one of the examples, which, among other things, included the sponsorship of the National Best Farmer Award, the donation to schools in poor areas, and support for community-oriented programs. Similarly, in 2023, the bank set aside GH¢ 3.906 million for national and community causes, thus reinforcing its social impact in the rural and agricultural sectors even more. By the end of the first nine months of 2024, CSR spending had risen to GH¢5.375 million, which would allow the bank to support programs in schools, healthcare, the environment, and youth empowerment that would benefit thousands of Ghanaians. ADB’s CSR strategy has been constantly emphasising and implementing community-driven long-term development for the last three years, thus establishing its reputation as a socially responsible bank and a contributor to the national socio-economic growth. 4. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC's corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the years 20222024 is a potent sign not only of the existence of the multinational company; it is equally a transparent and thoughtful method of its strategizing to do good and thereby contribute significantly to the living standards of the communities located around it, through the ministry of health, public health, environmental protection, education, and entrepreneurship development, road safety, sports, and providing clean energy as some of the areas made known to the public. The 5 Company elected the youth to be the central theme; hence, the Young Dealer Scheme and Young Graduate Program were unveiled as its top announcements. Out of the whole number, 218 young dealers were granted both financial and technical assistance, and slowly but surely, a good number of these dealers emerged, being able to sustain themselves and turning into self-reliant businesses. The eco-friendly activities comprised not only tree planting but also beach cleaning as part of the Green Ghana Agenda, and the educational and mentoring programs were so effective that they turned employability and skills enhancement into even more important factors. In the year 2023, TotalEnergies was able to achieve a lot more for the community, where tree planting in the Eastern Region was one of the actions; over 300 children received personal hygiene and negotiation skills mentoring; and the nationwide road safety education under the Helmet4Life Campaign, where 3,000 crash helmets were given, and coastal clean-up activities in partnership with World Cleanup Day were done. Furthermore, through the launching of climate change and new energy courses at KNUST and UMAT, participation in various university career fairs, provision of humanitarian assistance to the victims of the Akosombo dam spillage, and the extension of the Young Graduate Program. A major event of the year 2024 altered the concept of CSR and led to the emergence of projects on a large scale with a greater impact aimed at a wider audience, rather than the previous smallscale but very impactful ones. The Young Dealer Scheme is one of the direct initiatives, which is also indirectly benefiting 232 dealers, has made available approximately 4,500 jobs for Ghanaians, and the average backing per dealer amounts to GHS283 million. The Of the Year Challenge was the single turning point that transformed the scenario for the business people since it opened up the past period with more than 60 applicants receiving support and 12 winners sharing a total of over GHS4.8 million prize money, of which a portion had already been distributed. Management 6 training to 39 graduates, both local and international, the highest number to date, was provided through the Young Graduate Scheme. The program's main focus was education, which included 200 university scholarships, partnerships for climate and energy education, and financial literacy and well-being training for over 4,000 girls in the Kumasi region, among others. The above-named TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC has moved its CSR activities from 2022 to 2024 due to the facilitation of enterprise-driven, sustainable and social investments. The company is now taking the lead in the areas of youth employment, local content development, environmental care, and the long-term socio-economic resilience of Ghana. 5. CalBank PLC CalBank's CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities were not only neatly organised, but they were also completely devoted to the cause. Over time, the CSR activities slowly turned from merely helping the bank and its employees to having a direct and positive impact on the community. CalBank, right from the beginning, made known the main areas of the operations: Gender, Health and Education, Community and Social Inclusion. The bank brought up the topics of gender and diversity in 2022; it formed an alliance with Agence Française de Développement for the purpose of conducting gender participatory audits and surveys in order to determine the level of gender equality, identify the shortcomings, and influence the reforms. The entire procedure was based on the policies of equal pay for equal work, no harassment, maternity leave, and health insurance for the employees, which resulted in women being 42% of the bank’s workforce and 27% of the board members by the end of the year. The internal reforms not only brought about better customer experience and stakeholder engagement but also won the bank a national award as the best local bank, a mark of distinction that was also associated with the GHS1.3 million investment in social activities, which directly targeted education, health, entrepreneurship, 7 environment, poverty relief, and sports. The bank’s community-oriented activities in the year 2022 were to a large extent focused on education. The most eye-catching activity was the financial literacy and mentoring program for big children, which was attended by about 800 children from the towns of Techiman and Cape Coast, whereas the second event was the creation of a 40-student ICT laboratory at the Asokore SDA College Demonstration Basic School to help teaching and learning of STEM subjects in the areas that are underprivileged. During 2023, CalBank's primary concern was the Community and the CSR policy that created the most buzz. As a result, the bank's total financing support amounted to GHS 70,000 for the refurbishment of the classroom at Bogyawe Junior High School, GHS 5,000 for Street Academy Ghana, and GHS 10,000 for the orphanage of Village of Hope. Among the activities of the year, health programs and free screenings for breast cancer and blood pressure were definitely the highlights, with one of the activities involving the screening of over 350 female traders in Takoradi. Later on, the community's shift to a more preventive healthcare model was embodied by care of patients, quick detection, treatments, and referrals. In 2024, CalBank is going to execute its CSR that will be basic education infrastructure, the academic excellence of the University of Ghana, the development of sports, and the orphanages like Echoing Hills Village and Street Academy, Ghana, will be the new targets of support. Thus, the bank not only set a target of empowering the underprivileged children and youth but, in fact, went beyond that to the point of effective empowerment. Conclusion Corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions of the banks mentioned above, namely Fidelity Bank Ghana, Unilever Ghana, ADB Bank Ghana PLC, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC and CalBank PLC, for the 2022-2024 period showcase a gradual shift from being unproductive and 8 unsustainable mainly to very effective and sustainable social investments that are well-defined. The companies already noted have come to the point of creating projects and programs that will ensure measurable gains in education, health, environmental sustainability, youth and women’s empowerment, financial inclusion, and community development. In some cases, the interventions were aimed at addressing broad systemic challenges, while in others, more vulnerable groups were targeted, thereby demonstrating a good balance between scale and precision. The CSR actions of the aforementioned companies are a collective reflection of the private sector’s critical role in Ghana's inclusive growth, human capital development, and economic resistance while at the same time enhancing the companies' reputations and being aligned with the country's developmental priorities. 9 REFERENCES GCB Bank PLC.
