What is a
map?
A map is a diagram of an area of land or sea showing
physical features, cities, roads, etc.
A map can be used to show roads, borders of
countries, tourist attractions, location of resources
etc.
Features/Elements of
1. title - tells you what the a
mapmap
shows.
2. scale - shows the relationship between the size of the map and the
size of the area in real life.
3. legend or key - shows what each symbol represents.
4. north arrow.
5. border for the map.
Cartography is the science or art of making or drawing maps.
A cartographer is a person who draws or makes maps as a
profession.
Roles of a cartographer include:
∙ Design maps, graphics, illustrations and layouts
∙ Conduct fieldwork to collect and verify data used
in creating maps
∙ Revise existing maps and charts to make updates
Types of
maps
What is a political map?
A political map shows the government borders or boundaries for
countries, states and counties, as well as the location of capitals and
major cities.
Political maps change over time because boundaries change due to war
and treaties.
Capital cities are usually highlighted with a star symbol or underlined
text.
Political maps
Purpose includes:
∙ To show borders i.e. which areas of the Earth belongs to which
country
∙ It allows one to find certain locations easier as cities, borders
and roads are clearly defined on a political map
