Hermes Astrology
The Hobbit
The Hero’s Journey and the Natal Chart
Every birth chart represents a hero’s journey. It begins with
potential (the chart itself) and unfolds through choices, challenges,
and transformations—just like Bilbo Baggins’ adventure from
comfort to courage.
Bilbo starts in his 4th house phase—the Shire—symbolizing
safety, family roots, and familiarity. This is the realm of Cancer and
the Moon, where comfort and belonging reign. But when Gandalf
and the dwarves arrive, they activate Bilbo’s 9th house—the realm
of Sagittarius and Jupiter, the seeker, explorer, and philosopher.
The “call to adventure” is like a Jupiter transit: life expands beyond
what we thought was possible, forcing us to grow.
When Bilbo steps out of his home, he moves symbolically from his
Moon to his Sun—from safety to selfhood, from passivity to
purpose. In astrology, that is the soul’s true awakening.
Bilbo’s Chart: From Taurus to Aries Energy
If we imagine Bilbo’s personality astrologically, he begins as a
Taurus archetype: peaceful, comfort-loving, attached to food,
home, and security. His life in the Shire is a perfect Taurus
paradise—tea, meals, books, and routines. But as the story
unfolds, he is forced into an Aries experience: danger, action,
independence, and courage.
Astrologically, this transformation reflects a journey from the South
Node (comfort zone) to the North Node (soul’s purpose). Bilbo’s
South Node lies in Taurus—safety and stability—while his North
Node lies in Aries—courage and self-discovery. His entire journey
teaches that life’s meaning unfolds only when we answer the North
Node’s call, even if it means leaving everything familiar behind.

The Planets as Archetypal Guides
Each major astrological planet has a presence in The Hobbit:
● Gandalf – Mercury and Uranus:
He is both messenger and awakener. Like Mercury, he
communicates wisdom; like Uranus, he disrupts
complacency. Gandalf’s sudden arrival is the “Uranian shock”
that starts Bilbo’s transformation.
● Thorin Oakenshield – Saturn:
Thorin represents ambition, duty, pride, and the heavy
burden of leadership. His obsession with reclaiming Erebor
and his struggles with greed reflect the darker side of Saturn:
attachment to power and control. Yet, his integrity and loyalty
reveal Saturn’s higher side—honor and responsibility.
● Smaug – Pluto:
The dragon guarding the treasure symbolizes greed, fear,
and transformation. In astrology, Pluto rules death, rebirth,
and what we guard in our psychological “underworld.”
Confronting Smaug is like facing one’s shadow—our inner
dragon of desire and ego.
● Gollum – The Shadow of Neptune:
Gollum represents illusion, addiction, and loss of self, the
darker side of Neptune. He is consumed by “the
precious”—a symbol of obsession and escape from reality.
Yet through Gollum, Bilbo discovers compassion and clarity,
demonstrating Neptune’s power to heal through empathy.
● The Arkenstone – The Sun:
The shining gem represents the light of self-awareness, the
true inner treasure that everyone seeks. Like the Sun in
astrology, it symbolizes purpose, identity, and illumination.
When Bilbo takes it not for greed but to bring peace, he
shows that he has found the higher meaning of the journey:
self-mastery and inner light.

The Astrology of Transformation
Astrologically, Bilbo’s adventure unfolds through classic planetary
transits:
● Uranus transit: sudden change, the call to adventure.
● Saturn transit: trials, responsibility, and moral testing.
● Pluto transit: confronting fear, power, and rebirth.
● Jupiter transit: wisdom, reward, and expansion of
consciousness.
By the end of the story, Bilbo returns home transformed—his outer
life looks similar, but his inner world has expanded infinitely. This is
exactly what happens after a major Pluto or Saturn cycle: the old
self dies, and a wiser, freer one is born.
Tolkien’s Vision and the Cosmic Order
J.R.R. Tolkien, a devout believer in myth and meaning,
unconsciously infused The Hobbit with astrological and archetypal
patterns. His universe reflects a moral cosmos where every act
has consequence and purpose—much like astrology’s vision of
divine order. The stars, like Tolkien’s Valar and Elves, symbolize
timeless wisdom guiding the mortal journey.
Bilbo’s story reminds us that destiny (like our birth chart) doesn’t
dictate what we must do—it invites us to grow into who we truly
are. The planets, like Gandalf, nudge us out of our comfort zone,
urging us to become the heroes of our own story.
Conclusion: The Cosmic Journey Home
In the end, The Hobbit and astrology share the same truth: life is a
journey from comfort to courage, from ignorance to wisdom, from
fear to faith. Bilbo leaves the Shire not to escape life, but to
discover it. He finds his courage, his truth, and his inner light—and
returns home changed forever.

Astrology teaches that this is every soul’s path. We are all hobbits
at heart—ordinary beings called to extraordinary journeys. Our
charts are our maps, our transits the adventures, and our choices
the true measure of our courage.
When we dare to follow our North Node—to step out of the Shire
of comfort and face our dragons—we, too, awaken our inner hero.
That is the magic of The Hobbit and the timeless wisdom of the
stars.
