Work Overload: When Work Becomes Too Much
A report published by Cornerstone OnDemand reveals that 68% of employees are suffering from
work overload, and this is a clear indication that a lot of workers consider themselves as having
more duties than they can manage. Work overload is a major workplace issue because it is
caused by unrealistic expectations, damages employees’ health, and reduces productivity for
organizations.
When the employee is overworked, it means that the person is expected to do too many things in
a very short period of time. In many cases, organizations will add responsibilities without
providing the necessary support, training, or even reasonable deadlines. As pressure builds, the
employees are left with no other choice but to manage their workload through doing several
tasks at once, rushing through their work, or even sacrificing their personal time just to keep up
with the pace. These unrealistic expectations make it hard for the employees to be organized and
effective.
If the work overload thing goes on for a long time, it will very likely cause a negative impact on
the mental and physical health of the employees. The extreme pressure may cause the workers to
experience stress, burn out, feel anxious, and eventually even be physically drained. The
employees will find it difficult to manage their work hours together with their personal hours, so
their sleep, relationships and general health will suffer. Studies have indicated that continuous
work-related stress can cause serious health issues.
On top of that, employers are also negatively affected by work overload as one of the main
effects is a decrease in the overall productivity of the organization. Employees that are working
hard and are constantly under pressure will tend to make more errors, get easily distracted, and
work at a slower pace due to being tired and overwhelmed. Heavy workload does not support the
important goal of companies which is to be successful through good performance. Companies
would have to deal with employees quitting early, more sick leaves, and a bad work
environment, all of these problems will hurt long-term success.
In conclusion, work overload is a big problem in workplaces because it is caused by unrealistic
expectations, harms employees’ health, and lowers productivity. These issues show how too
much work can affect both workers and employers. To make things better, companies need to set
fair limits, offer support, and care about workers’ well-being. Hopefully, by treating employees
fairly and giving them reasonable workloads, both people and workplaces can do better.
