3) A point on a structural member is subjected to the stresses indicated on the stress
element. Determine the principal stresses and maximum in-plane shear stress acting at
this point. Also give the orientations that these stresses occur at.
4) The pressure tank is fabricated from spirally wrapped metal plates that are welded at
the seams in the orientation shown. The tank has an inside diameter of 780 mm and a
wall thickness of 10.2 mm. For a gage pressure of 0.82 MPa, determine (a) the normal
stress perpendicular to the weld (use positive for tension, negative for compression) and
(b) the shear stress (absolute value) parallel to the weld. Assume β=55∘
