Chapter 2
Jobs to be done
• The "Jobs to Be Done" (JTBD) framework is a customer-centric approach that helps businesses understand
the underlying reasons why customers "hire" a product or service to accomplish specific tasks. Instead of
focusing solely on the product features, the JTBD framework emphasizes the functional, social, and emotional
jobs that customers need to get done. This approach provides valuable insights into customer needs, drives
innovation, and helps companies allocate resources effectively to meet these needs.
NAICS approach
• The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a producer-centric standard used by federal
statistical agencies to classify companies for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical
data related to the economy. It is designed to provide a consistent framework for the collection, analysis, and
dissemination of economic data. Covering all economic activities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, NAICS is
a crucial tool for cross-border economic analysis.
Six forces
Case Analysis Guidelines (Appendix A Industry)
• Identify the company’s industry using the ‘jobs to be done’ and NAICS
approaches.
• Assess the impact of the 6 forces in the industry and rate them (high,
moderate, low). Create a table like the one presented for Indigo in
this chapter (i.e., Table 1).
• Generate a list of the top three threats and the top three
opportunities stemming from the analysis and describe them. You will
use this list to help justify your alternatives.
