Characteristics of Living Organisms: Overview
Chemical level: atoms and molecules.
Cellular level: cells are the basic structural and functional units of an
organism and the smallest living units in the human body.
Tissue level: groups of cells that work together to perform a particular
function.
• Epithelial tissue
• Connective tissue
• Muscular tissue
• Nervous tissue
Organ level: organs are structures that are composed of two or more
different types of tissues and have specific functions.
System level: consists of related organs that have a common function.
Organismal level: an organism is any living individual.

Planes are imaginary flat surfaces that pass
through the body
Coronal plane (frontal plane)

posterior (back) parts
Transverse plane (cross-sectional plane,

Ventral cavities are lined by serous membranes
• Divided into two continuous parts (layers):
• Parietal layer: lines internal surface of the body wall
• Visceral layer: covers external surface of specific organs
• Between layers is serous cavity with serous fluid
• Reduces friction between moving organs
