Lecture 0:
Course information
Course information
• Instructors:
– Dr. Michel van de Velden (Monday and Thursday lectures)
– Tutorials: you work under supervision of TA's.
Course information
• Monday lectures:
These lectures will be a combination of theory and explanation of (tutorial)
exercises. For the theory part, slides will be used.
• Thursday lectures:
Theory is discussed. Slides with theory will be made available (on canvas)
before the lectures. The book will be followed. However, some topics will be
covered that are not in the book.
All theory and exercise lectures will be recorded!
(The recordings will be made available at the end of each week through
a link on canvas)
Tutorials
The tutorials give you the opportunity to practice for the final exam. (Moreover,
you can earn a bonus during these tutorials)
During the tutorials you have to work, in small groups, on a set of questions
covering the new theory.
The questions are mostly taken from old exams.
You need to "hand in" your work at the end of the tutorial.
Instructors are present to help you solve the problems.
The usual regulations concerning attendance apply.
Sowiso
On the digital platform SOWISO you find additional practice material organized
by week.
In addition to the practice material, each week a test appears on Sowiso. These
tests (which you have to complete before the next Monday, 900) will be
graded and are part of a bonus that you can earn.
The SOWISO test questions, which are taken from old exams, are similar to
those done in the tutorials.
Sowiso: Week 1
This week during the tutorial (or before) you have to register on Sowiso and complete
the practice material as well as the test for week 1.
You can find information on how to logon to sowiso on canvas.
The grade for the test counts towards your bonus.
It is very important to first complete this week's practice material on sowiso as this
introduces JASP, a statistical software package, that I will use throughout this
course.
JASP is open source and completely free. You can download it from https://jaspstats.org/
Sowiso tests
With the exception of the first week, the tests become available each Monday at
9:00, and they have to be completed before the next Monday 9:00.
For each Sowiso test, you get two attempts. (So: you get one chance to correct
mistakes).
Tutorials
• Bonus-system: During the tutorials you work (in small groups) on exercises. At
the end of each tutorial, your group hands in the answers and these are
graded by the teaching assistants.
• In addition to the in-group in-tutorial assignments, there are the sowiso test
results.
At the end of the course, the average of your tutorial and sowiso test marks will
be calculated. The resulting grade will be scaled back to a bonus between 00.5. This bonus will be added to the result on your exam. (The maximum final
grade, however, will remain 10).
• If you are not present/late/working during a tutorial, points can be deducted.
• Note: The bonus is only valid during the regular exam. It is not valid for the
resit!
Exam
The exam consists of questions that require you to either enter the correct answer,
or select the appropriate multiple-choice option.
The tests in sowiso will have a similar format as the exam questions.
The exam will be open book. That means: You may use one (1) book.
If you do not have a textbook, you may use a “cheat sheet”. That is, one A4 (both
sides may be used) paper with handwritten notes/formulas. The relevant tables
with probabilities will be available in the online test.
Exam
Notes and/or lecture slides are not allowed during the exam.
Annotations in your book are allowed.
You can bring an approved scientific calculator
Use of a graphical calculator is NOT allowed
Literature
The book we will be using is:
The practice of statistics for business and economics (fifth edition)
Older editions of the book may be used but references (page numbers,
Tables, exercises) may not correspond. Don’t ask me for advice on how the
books corresponds.
