Nursing is one of the few career paths that a person does not choose but is rather chosen for. It is a privilege to be a nurse and should never be taken lightly. To work in the healthcare field takes a certain amount of strength but also love for people. That is what drew me to this profession. Being able to care for those who cannot care for themselves brings me true satisfaction. Nursing was not always what I envisioned myself as while growing up. It was not until I noticed how the people around me, especially my family, were dealing with loads of health problems. I wanted to learn more about the health issues that were plaguing my community as well. This curiosity led me to enroll in the vocational course, Health Science, in high school. This two-year course opened my eyes to the healthcare system and what I could do to be a part of it. This, along with encouragement from family and teachers, sparked my interest in the nursing profession. As a nurse I want to be able to help people like those who live in my community. Holmes County is one of the poorest counties in the state of Mississippi. The healthcare system here is not perfect and has its flaws. Many people here have low incomes and sometimes don’t have health insurance. This has prevented a lot of people from getting the life-saving care they need. I know these factors and many more cannot be changed overnight, but as a nurse I want to do my part in helping those who live in communities like this. Nurses play a vital role in a patient’s life. We will see some on the worst day of their lives and some on their happiest day. But to be there with them through it all will be my greatest reward. Whether it’s educating them, encouraging them, or having to physically help them back to health, I want to be a part of it. That is what motivates me to continue this path of becoming a part of this wonderful profession.
