Rationale of the Course: This course has been intended for the newly intake students of Computer Science and
Engineering, with the motto of developing their English language skills (i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and
Writing) to an optimum level at which they can comprehend lectures given in English, understand literary, nonliterary, formal and informal texts and communicate effectively about complex engineering activities with the
engineering community and with society at large. They also require to build up confidence in their own speaking
and writing which will be provided by teaching them essential grammatical items so that they can make themselves
effective individuals and leaders in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings. Moreover, since English is
an international language widely used around the globe, they will be able to continue conversations effectively on
complex engineering activities in the society in general and with the engineering community especially; such as,
being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentation and
give and receive clear instructions.

Course teachers may change the magnitude of marks in Bloom’s category (Both for CIE and
SEE), but he/she will have to keep in mind that the % of Higher Order Thinking Skills
(HOTS) must be about 60% or more and all the Bloom’s categories to be addressed during the
semester. If necessary, a course teacher may also use Cognitive (Knowledge), Affective
(Attitude) and Psychomotor (Skills) domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Question papers for
semester end examination (SEE) shall be moderated by the examination committee
composed of both internal faculty and external member.
