White Lies
When it comes to lying, we usually think that is it’s a bad habit that most people do on a daily
basis. Well, it actually is a bad habit and in some cases, it is even illegal. But if it’s bad, why do we
lie like it is a natural thing to do? The answer is clear, to protect ourselves and others. Sometimes,
those little lies called “white lies” are acceptable and can save us from trouble. Let’s look at some
of those acceptable lies.
First of all, white lies can be told to protect other people’s feelings. It can save people from
minor hurt or embarrassment. For example, when someone asks our opinion about their outfit,
we most probably tell them that we like it, even if we didn’t. Another question that can be
directed is that if the person had gained weight. Of course we answer with a big “NO” to prevent
any hurting. Telling these lies doesn’t make anyone a bad person.
Some lies are also acceptable when a person wants to make themselves appear better. For
example, some people tell little lies in work interviews. Another situation is when someone meets
a new person, if he/she wants to look superior, they will lie to look so. These little changes or
exaggerations probably will not cause any damage to anyone.
Lastly white lies can be told to prevent possible arguments. Lying or staying quiet might seem
the right thing to do when a person disagrees with another person’s thoughts on subjects that
aren’t really that important. In those times, telling white lies might save both sides from getting
into a pointless argument.
To sum up, even though lying is morally wrong, sometimes it is actually the right thing to do.
It can prevent people from hurting each other, and save us from a big trouble. A world without
those little, innocent lies would be worse than the world that we are living in today.
